Captree is open until Memorial Day weekend. At that point, they put a toll to get into the parking lot, so everyone moves into the smaller OBI parking lot. Lately, with all the crackdowns by the cops in the area, it hasn't been much fun.

By the summer, we should have regular events every weekend here in the NE section anyway.

Rumor has it they are going to start charging at Captree in the next week or so to try and prevent the car gathering. Hopefully, not true, but be prepared. The weather is cooperating, so Bellmore should also be in full swing soon, and I think it's time for us to make a few NJ Sunday runs to Jeff's (mvcrash) Sunday AM meets.

I kind of think it would be worth paying to park at Captree in the summer months and let everyone else fight to find parking at OBI. Also I remember when Junior was young If we got to Captree before a certain time there was no one in the booths and I drove right in without being charged!

The only problem with that is most of the people that go out on the party boats are a very early morning crowd. You might have to get there before dawn to secure a bunch of spots together. Even then you run the risk of damage from an errant rod or tackle box.

Guys with $50K+ cars (and much more) too cheap to pay the parking fee at Captree. So they go stand around in the broken glass strewn ****hole OBI parking lot, too small for 1/5 the cars that show up. No bathroom, no food. Only New Yorkers.

I still would rather pay the fee. It'll be a much smaller crowd. And I don't ever remember seeing the lot fill up when I took my son fishing there as a kid. Heck with the new fluke size requirements I'm surprised many people even fish there in the warmer months anyway. We could stay in a far section away from the boats. I guess.

never understood that now gs will be 4-5 bucks soon Economy is also killing off the party boat crowds as they raise prices due to fuel. I think many will go under soon. I live on Woodcleft Canal in Freeport and the boats seem real slow. Many not even going out it seems.

You're probably right. I own a boat and I noticed a lot less people on the water last year than there were years ago. I think there will be even less recreational boats out there this year. I know someone that paid $4.25 a gallon on the water this past week.
I'll bet the party boats pay the state a fortune for those slips at Captree. That's probably why the State Park Police are trying so hard to "discourage" the car guys from filling up the lot on Sunday mornings.

I did not see any police today. Other than the normal 2 troop cars in the parking lot sitting at the entrance.

i use to race boats offshore 1 mpg and running race gas which was 4 bucks way back near 10 years ago. Now I have a 07 19' Whaler to beat up and ride around. Boating industry is crashing now between fuel and tight credit it's over! Few years ago Newday had an article about the charter boats. The charter owners said then if they go over 40 for a half day the crowd drops like a stone. They must be over that now with fuel even higher than two years ago. I see the boats not going very far even pleasure boats.

I think the state would be glad to see us pay the parking fee there this summer!
