Default Connecticut Advice Please

Whilst this thread is not Corvette related, I am a Corvette owner from the UK and am hoping fellow owners in the Connecticut area could give me some advice please.

My wife and I are coming over for Corvettes at Carlisle for the fifth time next month. This year we have two days after the show to see some sights and we have been looking at the coastlines of Connecticut and possibly Rhode Island.

Can anyone suggest anywhere which meets the following criteria please, which we could use as a base for the two days:

A small coastal town (probably a tourist resort)
Plenty of Hotels and restaurants preferable with sea views
A promenade or boardwalk
Local places of interest

Thank you for taking the time to read this thread - any advice and guidance gratefully received.

Cheers

Here is one idea.

http://www.mystic.org/

You are also not far from the 2 largest casinos in the world.

I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford in your country in the 60's .
I lived in the village of Duns Tew in Oxfordshire. I befriended a couple
of blokes and took them to the officers club and they took me to the University of Oxford for dinner. I didn't realize the school was a federation of 38 colleges. I can say, without lying, I went to Oxford.
My 2 daughters were born in Great Britain and had dual citizenship.

I enjoyed your country very much.

I hope you have a good time here.

I agree with all of the above. Sightseeing in Connecticut: 2 casinos, Indian museum on the Foxwoods reservation, Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquariam, Submarine Museum, Town of Essex, Essex steam train. Rhode Island: Newport shopping and mansions, mansion walk, great beaches in Rhode Island.

Where are you flying out of to go home? New York?
Thing is that if you only have a couple of days, driving from Carlisle to Rhode Island is a bit of a hike, will waste a day doing that.
Theres plenty of good spots in Ct as losted above.

Let me know if you want rest stop on the drive, I'm in White Plains, NY (20 minutes north of the city right off of I 95) can take you for good Italian food or buffalo wings...catch up with another Brit. (its easy to guess from where in the UK I came from!)

Thank you so much for your suggestions - please keep them coming.

Nick - thank you for your offer, but time is not on our side this trip. By the way, you're better off living in the US than anywhere in the UK these days - I envy you. We fly in and out of Newark

777 - I'm glad you enjoyed your time in England. The countryside around Oxford is some of the best in the UK

Please chip in with any more ideas.

If you plan on staying in Mystic CT, I'm sure you would like the Inn At Mystic,

http://www.innatmystic.com/inn/publish/

You could walk to Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and the downtown restaurants, about 40 min ride to Newport RI, and about 20 min ride to the casinoes, 10 min ride to Stonington Burough - quaint whaling village also with some good restaurants. We have our boat there, so spend a good part of the summer in Mystic.

Hope you make it to CT, Enjoy your stay in the US.

I live in the New Haven CT metro area. The suggestions thus far are all right on. Keep in mind that CT is a small state and Interstate 95 is 75mph/120kph highway that runs right along the coast (avoid rush hour). You can get from a central point to most anywhere along the coast in perhaps an hour or less. Most any seaside towns have bed/breakfast type accommodations. As you move east from New Haven toward Guilford/Madision/Westbrook and beyond the towns become more quaint old New England but also offer less choices on dining and amenities.

The Waters Edge Resort http://www.watersedgeresortandspa.com is oceanside and is popular with the brides. Mystic seaport tall ship museum and aquarium are noted tourist destinations. The casinos offer more than gaming, there are restaurants, museums and top billed concerts at night in the arenas. While not a small coastal town, New Haven offers Yale University/Peabody museum, the Omni hotel, Shubert theater, shopping and many restaurants/pubs/clubs

If you've any questions or want more info, I'll do what I can

The Mystic area as suggested above would be my first choice if Rhode Island is a problem in terms of distance. If not I would go to Newport. Either way you got more things to do than the 2 days you have to do them in. Cheers. Joaquin

Since you have just two days after the show I guess that's Monday and Tuesday? That being the case, I would definitely recommend that you make the drive from Carlisle to Connecticut Sunday to avoid wasting time in traffic getting around NYC.

Also if you are leaving from CT to Newark Wednesday(?) plan accordingly for traffic depending on your departure time. Don't take the Cross Bronx Expressway or George Washington bridge in either direction!

See you in Carlisle!

Great advice - thank you. I could live with missing my flight home and being stranded in your wonderful country...........

I'm a bit of a diehard when it comes to Carlisle - it's such a great show that I never want to leave and stay right until the end on Sunday. Look out for the idiot wearing a UK Corvette Club Corvette Race shirt despite the heat - that'll be me. Staying in Carlisle to have dinner with some friends on Sunday, so have allowed Monday to get to Connecticut.

Thanks again to everyone who replied
