Hello all, for starters my name is Anthony. Technically I'm in the southeast region, however, being in NoVA I is actually easier for me to do things in your neck of the woods as I am limited to a certain distance from base. (yes... military)
Obviously, I am new here and looking to buy my first Corvette. I am looking for a C5 and I want a stock to lightly modded car. I want a car that is reliable enough for weekend driving/cruising. Basically I was hoping some/most/all of you would be willing to give me some pointers. Basically, what should I be looking for when it comes to C5s? Problematic areas, tell-tale signs, etc...
I'll leave it at that for now, grab my and I'm all .

Welcome aboard Anthony. There is a sticky in C5 General that can give you the rundown of common issues. Most of us have experienced some of the common issues and can tell you how bad they are or if they are easy to fix. You'd be surprised at how some farily frightening problems can be easy to fix.
You can also start looking for cars in C5s for Sale - you'll find some decent deals there. What kind of C5 are you looking for? Coupe, Vert, FRC, Z06 (assuming you know what all of those mean) and what kind of mileage or price range? Can steer you better with that as a start. Prices are pretty decent so you should be able to find something nice.
I don't really have a preference as far as coup, vert, z, etc. I am looking for a manual, would like to stay away from black as how much of a pain it is, and am looking to spend no more than $18k. As far as mileage the lower the better, but not overly concerned with it as I plan on building an engine in the next year or so.
Good luck in your search, i recently picked up an 03 Z06 that i absolutely LOVE. Unfortunately i have an issue with water leaking into my car, so be careful if your shopping for an FRC/Z06. I wish i had known about this problem before hand :/
stay away from 2001s, they have a ring problem and is a big job to fix.
97,01,and 04 are the years I never owned
does ECS, Cartek, and VD also see 2001's puking a lot of rings, I remember a write up in 'Corvette' magazine covering a ring/warr. repair at Ramp Chev/LI, looked fun
I kind of think that was a VIN limited run, feeling optimistic today

Oh and do not want a car with nitrous or meth!
I had been looking for another Vette for close to a year. You can snag an early C5 coupe with 20 to 30k mileage in the private market for as low as $16k from private sellers. I have seen high mileage ones as low as $12k. If you want a Z, I have seen 20 to 30k mileage Zs going for as low as $21k (got my '02 for a tad over $22k at a dealer). Probably be looking at a Z over 70k miles to creep closer to $18k. Verts didn't interest me so I hadn't been following them. If you are looking to build an engine I would think an FRC (similarly priced to coupes) or a high mileage Z would be the best platform. I too only wanted a MN6 - they are a little harder to come by - I think they only represented about 20% of production in the coupes.
And as others have said, there was a production run in 01 of cars with bad rings that ate alot of oil. I came across one in my search. Soon as I saw several visits to the dealer for an oil-related issue I ran like Forest. Also be sure to run the codes on any car you see - alot of dealers don't reset them. Also be leary of any odd electrical quirks - some are cheap - others not so cheap to fix.
A appreciate all the help you all have provided sofar! I must admit that I originally was looking at 03-4 Cobras before realizing my slip in mental acuity and swinging on over here.
Steve, I appreciate your offer, and will definitely be calling you tomorrow after I get off work!
