Default NJ inspection

Car is up for inspection and having a loud exhaust with no cats and tinted windows won't help me much. I don't even know if they would pass it with the HID headlights either. Anyways, even if I did put the stock manifolds back on and the stock h-pipe, I would still have to take the tint off. Anyone have any suggestions or can help me out in any way. Thanks!

if you wanna go through state inspection then you need to put factory headlights in, take tint off the side windows (it's ok on the back) and you would have to put the cats on. nut i suspect you knew this already.

good luck.

I got a local garage that should do it. Is your check engine light on?

Local private garage is your best friend in this situation. No A-holes behind the wheel of your car on their Fred Sanford dyno, and no problems getting a sticker.

I couldn't find any local garage to pass my car with no cats. Ended up throwing a catted X I borrowed from somebody and drove thru state. I wonder if they would even check your headlights, I dont remember state ever checking mine. I'm sure they will find the tint though.

Check engine light is not on kingsey. I am sure they will check the headlights. They failed my car 2 years ago for the e-brake, and i still haven't bothered nor needed to get that fixed.

I'm far from an expert here, but have a hard time believing they'd fail you for HID's. I think they just check that you're lights work.

I also never saw them "look" for cats. Car is so low, that it's virtually impossible for them to do so. However, they did drive my car over a ram, that lifted the front off the ground. That's when I thought they were going to check. Nope, just grabbed each front wheel and pulled to make sure steering was tight. (I have no idea how they know how to position the car over the hydrolic ram, it was a single large rectangular piston that extended from the ground. Looked like it raised the car from the front cradle, or worse, oil pan )

From my impression of watching them, it appears that inspecton is strictly a safety test, they don't care about anything else. As long as the car's computer says it's running fine (no CEL), than no bother with emmissions.

With that said, I don't have HIDs and have cats (highflow cats on AR headers), so who knows. True test will be when I bring the cammed TA to inspection next year. Most of the sensors show a status of incomplete, and I wonder if they fail you for having too many.

Has anyone ever seen the typical state inspection employee? I've even gone through inspection with expired insurance and registration and they've passed me.

If your ebrake still isn't fixed, than I'd doubt you'd pass this time. What did you to two years ago?

I went thru Flemington and Washington state places and both slid mirrors under my car to check for cats. Both never checked my headlights though.

People have failed in NJ for HID bulbs in the stock housings, you need DOT approved HID housings to pass. Most times they do slide mirrors under the car to check for cats. On OBDII cars the emission testing is done via the computer, even if you don’t have a CEL you still might not pass, for example if you just recently disconnected the battery they will tell you to come back after you driven the car for a few cycles.

They failed me at the State Inspection Station for tint on my truck's front door windows. Not real dark tint either, only tinted to match the rear door windows. Took it off, passed inspection, and had it back on a week later. I plan to go to a private shop this time for the inspection. I also plan to have some other needed work done at the same time. It might make them a little more receptive to passing it as is.

Well, you can roll down both windows and that might solve the tint problem...

I had them look for CATS on my 73. They got real excited when they didn't find any.

I said, "It's a 73". They said no CATS"!
I said, "But it's a 73". They said "Oh".

So much for the State Inspection Stations. They should go.

Go to the NJDMV website.
Locate Collector Car Status.
If you can live with 3,000 miles per year, you have the answer.
If you are more than 3,000 miles per year; Then you have the answer for 2 years only,at least until QQ plates.

Yeah, that's not going to work... I actually tried that many years ago with my old Camaro... "roll the windows up" was the very first thing they said to me.

Not sure if you were sarcastic or serious, but figured I'd chime in.

Good luck.

I went to a private place and they passed it for $20. The car was bone stock at the time, and I asked them if they would pass it when I bring it back with no cats and they gave me a dirty look.

You should just put on a set of Random cats. Unless this car is full time drag car and you need every nano second out of her for ET, its not worth not having cats. It will actually feel quicker from a dig because you have some back pressure again.

Plus your children's children will love you for it
