After lurking on this forum for a very long time and searching for 1996 Collector Edition Coupe, I am now the prould new owner of low mileage mint condition LT1. It has all the options I wanted including F45, both tops, CD, electronic air, perf axle, etc. I brought the car home from western PA last week and spent most of today detailing it.
The car drives like a dream and I am impressed with both its performance and comfort (my last vette was a 1982). I do have a couple of questions:
1. Even though it is low mileage, the driver seat has some pretty deep veining and the leather feels rough. Any treatment recommended?
2. The previous owner put on a power effects exhaust system (he paid 1400 for it). I also took the stock exhaust system from him. I'm not sure how much of a performance difference the Power effects make, but my wife is already complaining that the car being too loud (even with quieter setting on the power effects). I am inclined to put back the stock exhaust. Any opinions?
3. I want to get an extra pair of mats, and a mat for the back. Any recommendations for a place to get them (without logo).
4. Should I get a warranty? If so, which one?
thanks to all of you. I plan to be an active member of the forum.

I'm not much into waxing or cleaning dept.. you want to speak to JD... (LPE 90 383) he is Da Man when it comes to things like that..

If you do not plan on any "Hard Core" racing, I'd say put the stock one back on, & keep her happy :) ..but also try to think how much time she will be spending in it..
My wife says mine is too loud, but she is in it only 1 or 2 times a month, so it will remain loud... but if the stock exhaust will keep peace, do it... It will still be fast enough ..

Try Mid America... they have all that type of stuff...

I bought my 96 when it was only 9 mos old.. & it had only 2800 miles on it.. I drag race it EVERY week, and drive it like I hate it (though I LOVE IT) & I did not get any extended warranty.. (MY opinion) they are a rip off.. If you are going to get a bumper to bumper it will cost a small fortune...
It also depends on how much you plan on using the car?... Is it going to be a daily driver, or just driven on weekends etc... think about how much you will be driving it.. (miles) & get a price...if it costs $1000 for 2 yrs, you can do a lot of repairs for less than that, & those warranty do not cover clutch, breaks etc.. (wear parts)
Maybe I'm lucky, but I only broke a rear & thats because I race it every week...
personally I would not buy an extended warranty..

2. You have to ask your wife, "whos car is this yours or mine?" If she says yours then leave the exhaust on if you like it. If its both of yours then file for divorce! :D
4. Get the warranty, even though 96s are a solid cars, wear and tear stil happens and those parts are expensive! I purchased a 3 year for 1400 and i already got my moneys worth.
congrats on the new acquisition..... and like mojo said, check out the cartek corvette challenge site...... it's good to get it dirty once in a while, so bring it to Etown on april 6th
Not sure about the leather treatment but I use plain ole armore leather care on my seats and it seemed okay.
The PE system, I had it on my 94 this now for sale and has been for a while. I took it off to resell to recoupe some of my cost. It is a great system. I did find that there is some resonance if you drive in 6th gear and have the rpm below 1900. My solution was to drive in 5th and the resonance/noise was pretty much gone. Play around with it some and see if you want to keep it. I should return about $600 - $800 if you want to sell them. I liked the look and the sound. Performance, there is some gain but minimal.
For the mats take a look at the corvette forum mall link on the right hand side of the page.
