Way back in the early 1980's I used to compete in TSD Road Rallys on Long Island. Most of these were charity events and sponsored by a long gone radio station WLIR. They were a blast. I did a google search and cant find any info. Do these type of events still happen? I think the SCCA was involved but cant find anything on their web site. I was hoping you car club guys might know.
Years ago I was also into TSD rallies, used to do them almost weekly in the NYC metro area, upstate NY, NJ and CT. Haven't been on one in quite some time and I'd love to do one again. If anyone hears of an event please post.
TSD=time, speed, distance. Not only do you have to follow route instructions precisely, you also have to follow set speeds accurately too. There are checkpoints along the route that will come up unexpectedly and you are supposed to arrive at the correct time based on the speeds set in the instructions. Each second too late or early is a penalty point. The closest score to zero is the winner. There are classes for the different methods of timing devices you use, starting from SOP (seat of pants) to fully computerized with odometer take-offs from a dead (not driven, no wheelspin) wheel. I worked up to the "equipped" class and did quite well at it. The most fun were the all-night 400 mile rallies where you could barely make the timed checkpoints on time. You'd be driving flat-out all night on dirt roads, forest fire roads, etc. 80-100 mph on dirt at night can get real exciting! One step under the pro-rallies they sometimes show on Speed channel.
BTW, typical day rallies are set at normal driving speeds within the speed limits so that anyone could compete and no danger involved. I guess increased congestion since when I use to do it is one of the reasons for rallyings demise.

Thanks for the information!! Seems like it would be fun.....
The rallies I participated in started around route 110 in Mellville or route 112 in Medford and would go all over the Island. Many times we would finish in the Hamptons,Montauk or back where you started.

Did you check with some of the SCCA region's websites? I know that the South Jersey Region (based about 15 miles from Philly) runs TSD rallies (and the occational gimmic rally, too) throughout the year. I think the Northern New Jersey Region hosts some, also.
South Jersey Region's website is: sjr-scca.org, Northern NJ's is: scca-nnjr.org and I think the New York Region's is: nyr-scca.org. If you go to scca.org, there is a key for finding a region, that lists all the regions and their websites and contact information. I'm sure that you should be able to find some rallies in the northern NJ, NY and CT area.
The Westchester Sports Car Club (WSCC) hosts usually 3-4 TSD Rallies each year. Most of them start in Mt. Kisco, NY. They are a ton of fun to do and its super competitive. On average about 30-50 cars enter.
Their first rally of the year will be the Bunny Run, which is hosted around Easter sometime, usually the weekend prior. It will be a Night Rally starting at 7pm on a Saturday night.
FYI- Dirt roads, rough roads, unpaved roads are used at times.
I have always had fun with TSD. My dad started me on them when I was just able to drive! Lot of fun. The only trouble is finding a Navigator! Everyone wants to be a driver!
Here is a link the the New England Region. You can usually find at least 1 TSD per month and usually in conjunction with the Rally-X circuit. HERE Obviously, you're not running in rally-x but most of these TSD are average roads and will indicate if there are any "dirt" roads.
here are the normal rules and regs that are fairly uniform across the country. HERE
I have run TSD and Rally-X in my STI, TSD in a Toyota Matrix, Tercel and two Celicas, an Acura Legend and my all time favorite was an 84 VW Rabbit GTI! Needless to say, you dont need experience or a fast car to get into it.
Drive on!
