Hey guys. I'm looking for some insight from NJ residents. Anyone that has window tints (on any car), what is a decent % that won't cause much trouble? Does having ANY on the fronts fail inspection?
inspection doesn't matter anymore, but it is technically illegal on the front windows. i am very close by and have 18% on the front windows of my silverado to match the factory tint on the back. and also have 25% tint on my vette. if you are interested to see them just hit me up.
Hey man thanks for the reply. Are you saying that they will pass inspection with tint? Have they started doing 5 year inspections now? Have you ever had problems with the law cause of your tint?
Sorry for all the questions. Thanks again for your help!
You won't fail inspection because of tints, or anything visual for that matter. I passed with tints, no front plate, loud exhaust, etc.....All they care about is OBD2 codes. As long as you don't have a check engine light when they scan your computer, you're good. My car is an '02 and they gave me a 2 year inspection sticker. I don't know the specific age the vehicle has to be in order to be eligible for 5 year stickers. I think it has to 2006 or newer.
I personally have I think 20-25% on my vette (previous owner installed them)
New cars get a 5 year sticker, after that, all cars are "inspected" every other year. Even model year cars (1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, etc.) get inspected this year, because 2012 is an even year. Odd model year cars are due for inspection in odd years.
Inspection now is only for emissions, but if you fail the emission test, they can do a full safety inspection on your vehicle.
By State law, NO tint beyond factory, is allowed on the front windows or windshield. Police can, and do, ticket drivers for tint on front windows. Whether or get ticketed for tint, really depends on the town and the officer, and just how lucky you are.

That is not true.
My 2007 Vette was due this year. I just got inspected last week, and now have a 2014 sticker.
My Porsche had tinted windows and although I was pulled over a few times for the tinted windows I was never given a ticket. It really depends on the town. I hear some towns are bad.

And that's an important point. Just because inspections don't check for it anymore, doesn't mean you can't get pulled over and served a ticket.
