I've just moved to New York City from California, and now have to deal with moving my '66 stingray out here. Can anyone give suggestions for the following in/around NYC:
1) insurance - "classic car" policies are cheap, but apparently I can't get one without having another primary vehicle. As I live in Manhattan & don't drive, this is a problem.
2) mechanic - need someone trustworthy who knows midyears.
3) parking/storage - again, I won't be commuting in it or driving it in the city, so somewhere outside of Manhattan that I can get to by public transport is fine. (Long Island maybe? NJ?)
1) insurance - You might consider getting a beater, or a running junker car. The cost of this + insurance might do more than off set the regular cost of insuring your vette. This would also allow you to park outside of Manhattan yet with easy access to your vette.
2) mechanic -Sorry, I have a 2001 so I cannot assist here. Vettedoctors on long island also have a good reputation here.
3) parking/storage - You have a couple of options here:
-Try looking in local newspapers in and around the suburbs of NYC, like queens, brooklyn, new jersey and you might find a local resident with a garage for rent. There might also be some internet listings for these as well.
-There are several parking garages in and around NYC and BKLYN and queens that might serve your purpose as well. In NYC the location of the garage greatly determines the cost so I would recommend you call some of the garages all the way up & downtown to get some price basis for comparision. The cost of garages in midtown are outrageous.
I am very fortunate that my Co-op has its own indoor garage where I park my truck, c5 and kz1000 (sorry its for residents only). Were it not for this garage I really doubt I would own my vette, parking in NYC can be a real b1tch.
PS: you can also reduce the cost of garaging by using an outdoor gargage + a good car cover.
Welcome. I think you will have 2 issues with classic car insurance. One, as you noted is the classic car cannot be your primary vehicle. But also, I think most policies require that the car be stored in a locked garage where you live. A remote garage, even if it is secure, may disqualify you. I would call the insurers (Also try Haggerty) and see if there is any flexibility.
Do you have work colleagues? Maybe you could find somebody who lives in suburbia willing to adopt your car, giving you unsupervised visitation rights. Three car garages are becoming standard! (I do NOT have one). I have a friend with more cars than garage space, and he rented a garage accross town.
There is an Exxon station nearby whose owner has 5 vettes (including a midyear) and is supposed to be pretty good at working on them. I stopped by to chat with him but have never taken mine in for work. MJ
Try looking in Staten Island a garage here would be alot cheaper than bkln, but isnt accesible vai subway. Also you can look into jersey city or hoboken for a garage but many there only rent to residents. As far as mechanics go I use a backyard guy who is currently restoring his own 65.

Hoboken rocks. except for parking. i think there is a 3 to 4 month waiting list for all parking garages there.
