The Destroyers have certainly come a long way since I was there ! I worked there from the end of the 60's into the early 70's. If you look to the left of piers 1&2, you can see a half pier with a building on the "T" end of it and a guard shack at the start of the pier; I worked there. You may know what it contained LOL. I lived in the house which is now "Ivy Lodge B&B" although it looked a lot different then.

The "T" pier is still there, although it's falling apart. There are no buildings anywhere along the pier access road. All torn down.
Who would have thought that after decades of rolling heavy steel plate to form curvateous hulls, that a pile of flat plate would be found as a more effective design for a warship. I still prefer the curvy ship, but this one certainly is awesome.

I was thinking the very same thing. The prow design has returned to the battle ships of the 1890's and the great white fleet of Admiral Dewey's flagship, the Olympia.

Apparently Zumwalt has a leak affecting the propulsion system and this needs to be remedied before she can proceed to Norfolk for commissioning. Four billion dollars you think they'd use some Stop Leak

Patience. We can cut some slack for the first of the class. It's been through builders trials and through INSURV, so it's not as if it hasn't been combed through thoroughly. I don't know what the issue is, but from the crude descriptions in the news, maybe a stern tube leak; if so, that can happen to any vessel with stern tubes.
I'm just glad to see it out and about. I got to see it floating at least when the wife and I hit up the maritime museum in Bath. I did some of the structural surveys on the VLS modules with my previous employer, but that's like looking at one "lego" piece. Still kinda neat to say "I worked on that".

I was actually involved in some of the initial computer technology that was going to be used on this ship back about 10 years ago. I always said we have a stealth destroyer it's called a submarine.
