Way to **** me off first thing in the morning… Thanks Pat…
So many good memories racing there. Other than the restrooms, it was a first class facility. Met a bunch of people that will be my close friends until the day I die.
I heard once the kids took over they had no desire to keep the place running. Don't be surprised to see it sold to a home builder
Desire or profits to retire I wish drag racing was still there too, but business is business and profits are profits. And business want maximum profit. My guess is if keeping racing there was more lucrative they would have found the desirer to keep it running. I can see them selling to a home builder too.
Insurance Auto Auctions (IAA), the same people that run the auction at E-Town, have been trying to buy Atco, and turn it into an auction site too. In August they lost their bid to have the track's zoning and land use permitting changed, when it was unanimously defeated by the planning board. I never heard if IAA was appealing the ruling, but as of now, it appears that Atco will be open for racing this season.
I remember going to E-Town back in the 60's, with my cousin to race his 62 409 Impala. It was called Madison Raceway Park then and they flag started the races. In the early 70's I raced at Atco, Strato Rods Dragstrip (McGuire AFB) and the 1/8th mile at Pleasantville (Atlantic City Speedway). Later my Corvette club ran autocrosses on the Strato Rods strip. Strato Rods and Pleasantville are long gone, and Atco's just hanging on.
