Insurance will not cover a vehicle if the collision involves racing.

The student and the instructor will just have to work something out.

The above is good in theory but I've seen a couple folks work out with
their insurance carriers in cases where the car has been a total. Most
track days are 'driver's education' and I don't think Unlimitedlaps has
timing so they are in that mode. Problem for owner is that if his policy
covers then he gets higher rates. Most policies cover if you drive the
car of another insured driver. Back to being a good judge of who gets
your keys, if anyone, ever ...

Overheard as they were getting back on the track...

Instructor: "Oh, that'll buff right out"

Owner: "WTF?"

No, that was a joke.

But seriously, I hope the owner gets some sort of compensation in this situation.

I also was instructing that day. I have close to 100 track days, most of those instructing. I have instructed for Unlimited laps many times and Highly recommend this group. I allow my sons to drive at his events. I plan to take one son and instruct May 15 with Unlimited laps.
I and most of the instructors ask the students if the instructor can drive the student’s car for the first two or three laps of the first session IF the student does not know the track and/or the instructor is not familiar with the shift point/gears for the track. This driving is done at low speed so the student can learn the track and the instructor can check out track conditions. In most cases that can be done if orientation laps are done.
When I have been asked to “show me how fast my car can go” I usually decline and offer a ride in my car. When I have taken their car, I do not push it. I drive smooth and use the same words I use when the student is driving.
Driving fast and passing on a cool down lap in any car is dumb. Driving a car like that up to the Cockscrew is REALLY dumb. The car like that will get light over the crest. Brake then and the tires don’t work.
As a long time instructor, I hate to see this happen because it tarnishes all the instructors. Please remember that this was one instructor and not the norm.

Ouch!! That's the reason why I don't let others except for family members drive my Corvette no matter how well they can drive.
