I have a wireless router upstairs....but need to give wireless access downstairs, but the signal is weak. If I put a wireless access point next to the computer downstairs, will my signal increase????
Lets staet off with what type of router you have? I have a Linksys and my neighbor accross the street can sit in his living room and surf the web with 2 bars from my network. Granted my network closet is in the garage, but still thats at least 200ft away. The expander would be you best best and at $60 not a bad deal if you have an extra ppowersource where the router is. I would instead consider an HGA7S that will give you a 7dbi gain and since you already have a signal might just give you what you need. Best part is it screws into the router and is half the price.
Granted this is if you are like everyone else and have Linksys and not some podunk chit like Belkin or Netgear. I am sure some of the other computer techs will chime in with their thoughts.
A wireless repeater would work as long as you place it where it can get good signal. The AP's which can connect via ethernet to your main wireless router is easier to deal with.
An alternative is to use high db units (EXP-400-i) like these guys..
If you have a WRT54G then you can download sveasoft firmware, flash your second (you will have to buy another one..) wireless router (the one downstairs), then connect your pc to it via ethernet..
OR.. IF you want wireless downstairs, then you will have to buy a third wireless router, connect the WAN port to on of the Eth Ports on the second (the one with the upgraded firmware) router... Then your compter can connect to the third wireless router and acquire an IP addy.
Reaters are OK, but not the best solutions. You can try a better antenna. There was this unit that works pretty good. It allows you to use the tv cable in your walls. You basically have this unit that plugs into your router and it then plugs into your coaxial cable. Then in any room with a coaxial cable, you connect a wireless antenna and now you have perfect signal.
If I have the computer on the floor, the signal is none existent and won't let you connect all the time. If I move the computer on top of the desk I get two bars (low-Med). I am thinking if I put the repeater top corner near the ceiling this will not be an issue.
Either way, the wireless router or repeater will be in the same room. I just need to increase the signal.
I have the same problem. My router is in my downstairs living room. When I have the computer in my upstairs master bedroom (directly above the living room) my signal is full. However, when I move the computer into my upstairs office (40 feet away, maybe?? and over my garage) I get 1 or 2 bars and lose connectivity frequently
IMHO extenders are crap and just make things complicated. I bought a new wireless N XTreme router and now have 5 bars everywhere in and around the house.
