If you are doing a full cage that fully surrounds you, go for chrome-moly. Much lighter than steel.
I did a full surround type cage in mild steel first. Mocked it up outside the car, was ridiculously heavy.
Did the same one in CM, way lighter, much better.
I believe the spec is 1¾" O.D. and .08something thickness.
.083 I think.
TIG welded.
