Oil leaks onto my driver side exhaust and mainly catalytic converter and this causes my car to smoke while it is stopped. It leaks at a pretty slow pace, most of the time I dont see any spots where I park my car. Also, I can see some of the oil on my filter and bottom of my transmission case (or whatever you call it "bell housing").
My question is what would cause this? Valve cover gasket? If so, how hard is it to change myself or how much would a vendor charge to get it done?
I'll guess C3 or C4. Anyway, first you have to determine the source of the leak. If a bright light under the hood and under the car doesn't do it,take rags and solvent and clean the areas that look like likely sources, such as the driver's side head and the area around the filter. Make sure the filter is tight. Jack the car up after the next drive and look for fresh oil.
First find out exactly where the leask is coming from. Buy a bottle of flouresent dye (Kragen or so..) for oil and a black light. Clean the area as much as you can. Add the stuff to the oil, drive it and look later in the dark garage with the black light. That way you can find any source of leaks easy!
A valve cover gasket is easy to change on a C3, on C4 a little more tricky because of the AC compressor.
Check the oil pressure switch behind the intake manifold. Check the driver side rear of the valve cover to make sure the rubber plug iis in the top. This is where a pcv hose would have gone. I bet you are getting blowby and building up a lot of crankcase pressure, blowing it out. Like the other post said, install a catch can.
Good luck

so you think these are more likely than the valve cover gasket?
