The good news is my EROD LS3 swap is amost ready to collect. The bad news is my registration is far enough out of date the police can impound it if I'm stopped while driving it home.
Anyone have experience getting a CA temporary operating permit?
I probably should have non-op'ed it. I paid my registration fees but couldn't get it smogged so don't have a 2013 sticker.
How far do you have to drive it. If its a short distance just take it home.. You probably won't be hassled. Even if you are, you would get a cite for no registration as long as you have owners slip with you. If all else fails, put another plate on it for the drive home. The odds of being stopped are probably nil...MIke
I have to traverse 3 states. From what I've read falsifying the registration---plates, sticker, etc.---is a felony, so not gonna go that route.
Normally I'd agree about the odds of getting pulled over, but you have to factor in it being a corvette and me driving it for the first time with almost twice the horsepower.
When I have a firmer completion date I'll swing by the AAA and/or DMV and see what they say. Just hoping to hear from someone who's done something similar in the meantime.
If it's a new build and you driving 3 states away, a trailer sounds like a good idea. Quite often new builds have leaks or need adjustments. You don't want to find that out 500 miles from nowhere.

Yeah. My brother lives a couple of hours away from the shop so I'm hoping to visit him as a shake down cruise. Might even be within my AAA towing coverage.
The shop is going to put some miles on it, checking everything out, before I collect it. We need to figure out a way for them to drive it legally too.
The following info applies to California. I can't vouch for traffic laws in any other state.
If you're six months and one day out of registration, your car can be towed.
Calif DMV will not let you non-op the car until your next round of registration hits. However, they will issue two, one-day move permits if you explain that the car is in the process of being repaired.
Recently did this on one of my cars (3 months ago).
This is what happened. Took my title/reg to DMV. Said I wanted a temporary operating permit. Received 90 days. There were no questions as to what or why. Car was on Non-Op prior to getting the TOP.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I got there. Seems the website was misleading because my understanding was I might be able to get a 1 day voucher, or something along those lines.
Not sure if that helps, but it sounds like the same situation I was in when I applied for a TOP.
Stopped by the local AAA office this morning. They will only issue the 60 day TOP if you have a smog fail certificate in hand, any other circumstance requires a visit to the DMV (and a supervisor). The only other option the AAA offers is single day permits, but they'll issue three days worth at a time, and will repeat as needed.
The shop will check to see if they can get something similar locally, otherwise I'll have to get a few days worth & mail them up so they can road test it.
Too bad you can't just go to a smog shop and have them fail your car sight unseen. You may want to try to get ahold of the BAR office. There are some smart guys there.

That brings a whole set of other problems with it. If it were my car I would not do that...

I'd call the BAR office before I tried having my car failed. But the trouble that the OP is going through is just another note in my list of reasons why our smog check system is so freaking screwed up.
