Advice on Porsche 944
Thinking of getting one as a daily driver.
I figure with 4 cylinders that they get decent gas mileage, is this not the case?
They can be fairly cheap, but unfortunately I don't know too much about them.
Any advice?

Burning Brakes
Never owned a 944, but you can bet that repairs will not be cheap. I remember back in the mid 1980's my dad purchased a 1974 Porsche 914, in about 2 years he soaked over $3,500.00 into the car. Be careful, Bosch parts from germany are very expensive

I owned a 944 and it was a great car. But owning one now isn't a good idea. The car isn't worth much andis at the age of a lot of repairs happening and you wil pay Porsce rates.

They will get great MPG. They really can cruise on the highway too. I had a 944 and 30+ mpg along with a 25 gallon tank, it would run forever. They say it's the cheapest Porsche to own too. Although, like people have said, the cars are older now and could break, a lot.

Bought a used '85.5 NA (non-turbo) 944 with over 100k miles on it back in 2002 for around $4k from a business neighbor. He had just spent nearly $7k having the engine modded and tuned before selling.
Within the next 3 years of ownership, I sunk a good deal of money in that car getting it restored to fairly new condition. For example:
2003: Major service done by independent Porsche specialist = $3,400.
2003: Total strip and repaint by local custom paint shop = $3,500.
2003: Updated rims / tires to turbo style (16") = $1,200.
2004: Service at independent including repairing dash leak = $3,700.
Not to mention probably another $2k or more in parts to replace existing worn items.
Then the dash began leaking worse than before.
Next the paint job began bubbling all over. Had to send the car back to have it completely stripped and repainted all over again. They did that job for free, but it took them over 6 months to complete it!!
By then I was tired of the 944, and just wanted it out of my hair. After only putting less than 1k miles on it over a 3 year period, I sold it to an employee for $5k. He and his sons managed to blow the engine in it within a couple of months after that.
Would I ever own another one? NO.

Melting Slicks
If you need a daily driver, your best bet is to find a slighly used japanese car. They are reliable, get good gas mileage and have the best resell values. How much are you looking to spend ?
