Test drive, 07 Mustang GT
My buddy just bought a brand new 07 Mustang GT 5 speed. He brought it over last night and let me take it for a drive. A very nice car.
I had just driven my 87 home, and shortly after got into the Mustang. My impressions of the Mustang:
The looks are great. He bought vista blue, with the GT appearence, (scoop, spoiler and tips), and the 18" aluminium wheels. The interior is well done, with the dash being very much like the old 60's Mustangs. Top shelf looks.
The ride is a little too soft. It's nice, and quiet, and pretty well mannered, but too close to my Bonneville in the softness. It actually felt a little odd because it sits pretty high compared to a Corvette.
It shifts very well. The throw is pretty short for a stock shifter, and it's very easy to navigate the gears.
Giddy up. Yep, it goes. It is a 4.8L 300hp car. As with most cars, the manual makes it feel even faster.
Now I compare this to my 20 year old Corvette. The Corvette handles better, no question. I'd lose him in the turns. I am odd, apparently, because I like sitting low. I prefer the way the Corvette is slung low, it feels like a sports car. You definately feel the road in the Corvette, that's a toss up kind of thing. Sometimes it's great to have that feel, but sometimes when cruising, it's more than you'd like. There is no question that the Mustang is faster, but not a lot faster. The Mustang has a 3.55 rear end, I have a 3.07. I think with some mild modding, the 87 Corvette would run with, if not beat the Mustang GT straight out.
Summary: The 07 Mustang is a very nice car. I was favorably impressed. But, I walked away thinking, that 87 Vette is quite a machine. 20 years later, and she can run with newer cars.

Now if Chevy would come out with their Camaro instead of waiting until 2009, that would be great! No way a mustang will compare to a Corvette unless its a Shelby GT 500 or something like that. But then again the Z06 probably out performs that even. Anyone noticed how the Mustang has flooded the market? I see them everywhere. Can't be good for their resale value down the road. I do admit that Ford did a great job with their retro styling.

I think they did a great job with the Mustang, has all the ponycar basics..Simple interior with analog gauges, 300 hp, stick, etc . Not fair to compare the two, they are totally different cars. Now if Chevy would get their act together and build something to compete with....
The new Camaro...Ill believe it when I see it .They screwed up royally by shutting down the Van Nuys plant.

In all the car mags when the GT 500 came out they were comparing the GT500 to the base C6 coupe and the C6 was spanking it in EVERYTHING

The 04 Cobra is a much better car, so is the GTR.
Not a big fan of the lastest gen, its not there yet. Its looks somewhat like a 70 Mach1 that was painted at Earl Shieb. No trim.

For about 50 grand you can have a Rouch supercharged Mustang which is suppose to compete with the Corvette. However its still a Mustang IMO and although it will handle well and brake well like the GT 350s of old I dont think its worth that kind of money. Of course those who paid the near Corvette price for a 65 Shelby mustang back in 1965 would be all smiles value wise today had they purschased a 65 Shelby Mustang, but I dont believe any of the Rouch, Saleen, or whoever builts their latset edition of a Mustang will ever be worth the investment the orginal Shelbys were. I think that was a one time thing.

I rode in a friends new Mustang GT last week. I really like the styling of the exterior although I think they could skim off about 300 lbs of extra sheet metal and not ruin the styling. Sitting in the passenger seat reminded me very much of the last Ford I sat in, a friends new F150. It just seemd that the dash and top of the hood are "in your face", like you are looking over them, which felt kind of cool and truck-like in the F150, but felt wierd in the Stang. Maybe I am just spoiled with the perfect styling and driver's field of vision of the C-4 .
Nice car, but if I had $28k in my hand I'd be searching for a pristine C-4 or a C-5 before ever plunking it down on the mustang.

The new Mustangs are supposed to be mid 13 second cars completely stock. I have seen several at the track and so far I have not witnessed one get below a 14.0. Maybe it's just bad drivers.

Chinese watches? Magazines reporting 13.5, tracks/owners reporting 14.5 avg. (had the same problems with Cobras, hence the SC) things that make you say hmmm

I like the new mustang, i had a 1989 lx 5.0 before the 86 vette
the Mustang is no match for the vette off the line but around 50 mph
i think the mustang will edge it out until top speed, and then the vette will run by it.
The new mustang is a nice car i was in vegas and my brother rented the V6 07 mustang (yellow) and it got allot of looks made the right sounds but was no match for my old 86 even, the interior is cool
but forget about anybody over 5 feet sitting back there.
with out the camero the mustang is best new car bang for the buck
not every one can afford a new vette, ( my 2 cents)
