Well I smoked the motor in my wife's 08 STi on Sunday, playing with a Blue Z06.
Little history:
The STi has 7000 miles on it and "0" mods. I've already received 3000.00 in cash for the crappy factory paint work (that only took 3 months of BS) and now it's got a broken piston.
Ironically I received a RECALL notice (in the mail) on Monday, the day after it broke Warning of a Re-flash need to the ECU so the rev limiter wouldn't hurt the motor (ring lands to exact)
Man I love the car, it's great for the family wagon, but this is really turning out to be a $30K+ problem. Any advice
How do you get $3K in cash for crappy paint? GM owes all of us then!
The paint looked like it had fish eyes in the clear, but you couldn't feel them to touch...so they offered to repaint the car and I said no way Car had next nothing for miles, Heck I just bought the damn thing and I Zaino'd it, you could see everything! So we agreed on $3 K. I thought it was worth it, considering no one can really noticed it but me.
will the lemon law work? I dont think its a lemon but it maybe something you want to look into. If they fix the motor and all is to your satisfaction than keep it.

At least they are willing to fix it.
"Lemon Law" is a reoccurring problem that effects driver/pass safety, and as for fixing it....we'll see this week!
Maybe the 2.5i models might of given you less problems with the motor, but defintely lacking on the power department. However, it puts around pretty well as a daily driver.

No way GM paint is awesome compared to Subies. I had an 04' WRX and the front end would chip from next to nothing.....then some dumb bimbo in a BMW took an illegal left hand turn and did enough cosmetic damge to the front of my car that I got it repainted (at her expense) and wow what a difference. Very common complaint on NASIOC and other WRX enthusiast sites....ultra thin chinzy paint jobs that chip or have the clearcoat go to pot in a couple years. Problem is the Impreza is an economy car....the WRX and STi have racy bits but it's still an Impreza with the same cheapness in the rest of the car...INCLUDING the paint job. One reason the new STi is not a good seller it's overpirced for what it is now...should never be more than 30K tops. For the same money you can get a well optioned Infiniti G35X (AWD version)sedan which is not quite as fast but ten times as nice in terms of build quality and luxury features.
I really dont see what the big problem is, sure it sucks that it blew but if they fix it under warranty and you dont have any more issues then no big deal. I have had a few issues with nearly new cars/toys over the years and they were fixed just like new under warranty. At 10K miles my 1996 Grandsport broke a retainer which put a valve through one of the pistons and grenaded the motor, fixed under GMPP without questions.... good as new. My 2006 Seadoo RXP lost/seized its supercharger and blew the gear drive, fixed good as new under warranty. My 2003 Acura CL Type S blew the tranny at 13K miles once again fixed under warranty with no further issues. I hope you get it fixed under warranty without trouble and the car runs as new when you get it back

I so hope your right, but so far this car has been a regret. Now lets see what the dealer says or tries to pull
Need some help...
Seems my STi is going to be down for a few weeks and Subaru will only offer a rent a car for 5 days...this is a brand new 08 STi with 7000 miles...no mods or track time. I've never had a car company screw me over like this 5 days...what is my family suppose to do, we bought a "NEW" car to avoid situations like this! This has already been identified as a recall issue...any advice
Well 5 days came out of the service writers mouth, and they typically secure your rental with your own credit card (i.e. over 5 days I'll pay..card on file)
Well, I work for a car rental agency, and they always say, "We will cover for X days." However, I have never seen a customer pay for a vehicle when the shop had to have the car for longer than the specified days.
The credit card is to insure that you don't run off with the car without them getting anything monetarily.

Well I have a friend's cobra for a week, after that if the Subby is still broken...we'll see what happens. I will say SOA customer service is the worse I've seen!
Update on STi
It turns out the car has bad "factory" valve seats, the rotors are cracked, the flywheel and TO in need of replacement and I got accused of AUTO Xing Which never happened, it's the wife's DD
And it only has 7K on the ODO
You must have took Subis one year free membership in the SCCA, so that means you were Autocrossing. They market the car as an almost rally car and they don't expect you to rev up every once in while.
