Default Failed NOX in Geo--new catalytic converter likely solve problem?

Heyas, not a corvette, but my brother has a 93 Geo Storm that just failed Texas emissions testing in Houston. The only test flunked was the nitrous oxide levels. I emailed my brother to find out how bad he flunked.

But he said he thought replacing the catalytic converter would probably solve the problem. They cost $175 though.

Any idea of whether that will indeed fix the problem?

Thanks!

The NOx levels are a function of the temperature inside the combustion chamber and are not reduced by the catalytic converter. You likely have a bad EGR valve or some issue with the timing. Greatly retarded timing increases the cyl temps and will make more NOx as a result.
