Default Nissan GTR brake job...WOW!

In this months issue of Automobile magazine, their long term test GTR needed new brakes. Here's the quote from the article..

"22,872 miles The brake squeal is unbearable, and our dealer tells us that it's time for replacement. Total cost for pads, discs, fluid and labor? A staggering $7346!"

Just thought you guys might find this interesting. I actually considered buying one of these last year before I bought my Viper. Makes me realize now that I can't afford the upkeep. But come on, seven grand for brakes and rotors? That's crazy.

Do it yourself and it'll cost you less than 1/7th of that.

Ah, why would you need new rotors at 22K miles?

Anyway, the full set of OEM brembo pads/rotors runs about $3K from a discount nissan dealer. Thing is, in normal driving these should last a lot longer than 22K

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NISSA...Q5fAccessories

Still about 3x the price of the 996TT rotors/pads.

I also thought about one of these a short time ago. I looked into the service of it because everyone was talking big money for small items. Sure enough, I found the brakes to be about $2800 job up front buying the parts from a wholesaler and doing the work my self. You could do the job on both my C6Z and Viper for half that. I love Nissan as a company and still have a couple of Z's in the garage but overpriced is still a no go in my book. Maybe in a few years when more people make parts and the price of owning the thing comes down a little.

Aren't the ceramic rotors supposed to last a very long time? I think the dealer is taking them for a ride. Ferrari did a test where they did some 200-0 testing on a pad/rotor dyno over and over and the rotors held up for the whole test and showed no wear. I would call BS on the rotors. The pads may be the real wear item but they are deciding to change the whole package including fluid after 22K miles to make a buck.

I have to believe you can find high quality parts by another reputable brake manufacturer for less than 3 grand.

Thing is, these parts come from Brembo. And Brembo is known for pricing their parts at the upper range. Also, given a rarity of this car, there isn't much incentive for other parts maker to make brake kits in these sizes. However, give it some time and I bet you'll start finding aftermarkets kits.

Nobody, but Brembo, makes them at this moment.

Well you won't be replacing the rotors so it can't be anywhere close to that.

it being drilled rotors, I guess resurface isn't an option.
an it a 2 piece brake, so it can be ordered in pieces,
A smart tech would of just order the disk, put it together and add more labour.
or maybe is a liability thing or just stealership tendencies

Why do you say that? They are both running ceramic rotors so I would think they are in the same boat. I still believe the GT-R couldn't have worn out the ceramic rotors and the dealer just saw them coming a mile away with their Automobile Magazine credit card.
