2012-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-arrives-with-580hp should we be worried.
When the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 first took to the Chicago Auto Show stage, General Motors told us it would arrive with “at least” 550 horsepower. Shortly thereafter we heard rumors that the ZL1 would trump the Cadillac CTS-V’s 556 horsepower. We’re happy to report both estimates have been proven true, with GM announcing the ZL1’s official stats on Friday.
The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has returned from the SAE with an official rating of 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. That makes the 2012 ZL1 the most powerful Camaro ever built, beating out the 1969 ZL1’s 427 cubic inch V8 by more than 150 horsepower.
“The Camaro ZL1 delivers supercar performance and technology in the sports-car segment,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “For sheer power, the ZL1 delivers more horsepower than a Ferrari 458, more torque than an Aston Martin DB9 V12, and a better power-to-weight ratio than a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.”
That power should give Shelby GT500 buyers something to think about, especially considering the ZL1 will be available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Think its going to come in at 4200lbs. And I know a couple of guys that have the new camaro's with superchargers on them...and they cant even begin to hook up with them. They are all over the road, and no traction control.

The ZL1 will have the launch and traction control system from the ZR1.

The biggest issue will be weight. This car will probably put ot some serious power with bolt ons and a pulley and tune.
If it weighs more than 4,000 pounds it may not be as fast as one would think.

This will surely help it hook up a bit better but it still won't make a big difference if it still weighs 4200 pounds. What they should have done is thought about putting the car on a diet... Look at the GT500... dropped over a 100 pounds in weight from 2010 year model to the 2011/2012. It helped the GT500 so much (its still heavy, but, a foot in the right direction). The Challenger is the weakest of the three muscle cars performance wise because of its weight.
All I can say is long live the Corvette program at GM and no the Z06 (and ZR1) has definitely nothing to worry about when it comes to any of the three muscle cars being produced right now.

580hp... sounds very nice.. but the darn thing weighs in the vicinity of 4000lbs... a solid half a ton more than us... so it will still be slower and handle like cheese on ice!!

I read in a camaro thread that the next gen will be in a new chassis smaller and lighter.
I bet her in the next few weeks we will see the 2013 GT 500 numbers I bet 600HP.
LONG LIVE the Z

The weight will hurt it from a dig, but I wouldn't mess with the thing from a roll if you're stock. We'll see.
I gotta admit, even though I don't want one, I think it's just cool as hell that they're going to sell a 580 SAE HP Camaro as a regular production deal. Just wow.

Well I have a 2010 Camaro SS that I have almost $20,000 worth of mods into, without the supercharger yet. At any rate, it handles pretty well, but needs some suspension work. The SS already has launch control. Many in this thread are correct when they say getting the power to the ground is going to be a problem. Right now without the supercharger, some bolt-ons and a tune it doesn't hook up so well. At any rate, over the winter it will get a supercharger, cam and headers and will have plenty of power, but there will always be a Z06 with more horsepower out there.
