Fuel pump problem??

Then about 2 weeks later, I began experiencing a hesitation or temporary slight loss of power. I originally thought it was related to the groaning rear diff for the versatrak AWD (common nuisance problem on these versatrack vehicles with clutch packs). I worried that the rear might actually be failing, so I rushed out and spent the $265 for the super special versatrack fluid (there is no known substitute that solves the groaning). Did my flushed diff, did 10 minutes of tight turns, groaning is gone and all is well for the past 3 days.
Then tonight, on the way home from work, the hesitation comes back on the highway. Now, with diff better, it's much easier to tell that it's actually a loss of power and seems like the engine is starved of fuel. Reminded me of the fuel pump fuse.
Arghh, the whole family was supposed to drive to the in-laws 3.5 hours away tomorrow afternoon. If I can't figure this out tomorrow morning, the dog and I will have to stay behind since there isn't room for us in the car. Maybe it's for the best since I spent most of last night washing the skunk smell out of the dog's face. Great week so far!!

Any tips on where to start diagnosing would be greatly appreciated. I have a good multi-meter and access to the service manual. I'm just not sure what I'd even start with dealing with a intermittent problem like this. Obviously the pump is working most of the time. I'll have to listen to see if it has a strong prime or not.
I had a similar problem years ago with a different car at the old house next to a large wooded area. Mice partially chewed through pump wires. Pump got weaker and weaker until the wires overheated and pump cut out. We don't have many mice at this house, but who knows. I guess I'll start there.
