The reason GM never tried to sell the SS
Fascinating read. Come to find out it was designed from the get go to be produced in very low numbers:

Safety Car
My local dealer had one in the showroom before I bought my Corvette. It has the specs, but is a plain jane sleeper. Not worth the money they wanted for it. The G8 GTS had the looks to go with the performance, but the SS doesn't.
A salesman tried to get me to take it out on a test ride when I was checking it out, but I passed.

I then beat the Stingray also with my old C5, which to be fair is modified and not at 350hp. Probably around 480 hp.
I didn't like the seats in the SS, they were HARD.

Thought the same thing about the seats when I went for a test drive. Almost made the decision not to buy it because of the seats. Another owner told me not to worry about it as they would soften up. He was right. Within 2 weeks they softened and even my wife commented how comfortable they are. Plus as a old geezer, entering or exiting the car is about as easy as it gets.

Back in 2015 we were looking for another family car and it boiled down to the SS (naturally) and the Dodge Charger SRT. We looked all over Houston to find a car we liked. The Dodge Charger SRT won the battle based on the looks of the Charger SRT vs. the SS. The reason why we went Dodge was the looks. The Charger stood out where ever we took it, however the SS looked like any Impala or Malibu. Where the G8 GXP really stood out, the SS didn't . This was a hard decision because we went in with the SS as a 60% 'favorite.'

Interesting article. Got my SS last day of the 20% off sale in November. Traded in an Audi S6. Love this car so far! Still feel at 50k there was a lot of value in it. At 20% off the car was a steal!

This makes sense. The SS was benchmarked off the E39 (99-03) M5 which is widely considered the peak of M5s in terms of driving engagement and fun. I can see it being more fun and less "work" than driving a Corvette.

Plus both front doors are HUGE. Super easy for an old guy like me with an occasional issue with my back to enter and exit. Even the wife commented on how easy it is to enter and exit. Both front seats are powered and the drivers has 2 memory settings. If you put the same package in a late model BMW you would be looking at a $75K + car.
OLD GOAT, that's a really nice G8!
