My 2009 Silverado with the 5.3 engine sometimes struggles pulling my 25ft travel trailer up the mountains. I've heard the later model Silverados with the 5.3 have more towing ability than my current one. Not sure if that's true or not. I've also considered upgrading to the 6.2 engine. But that comes with added cost since you have to go with either the LTZ or High Country. Thoughts?
Go diesel or 6.2.
Diesel would make a huge improvement since it's turbo and they don't fall victim to altitude like n/a.
2009 has the 6 speed, in 2015 the Silverado received the 8 speed, that might help with the powerband in the mountains as well.
If you're looking to buy new, you have more options than you think. When I bought my 2017 Silverado, I wanted the 6.2 but passed because they forced you into LTZ or High Country trim and I like cloth seats in a truck. Starting with the 2020 model year, Chevrolet began offering the 6.2 motor on lower trims. It's now available on Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, RST, LTZ, and High Country. With trade values being so high, I bit the bullet and trade mine in this month. Ended up with about 13% off MSRP and my trade was worth what I paid for it three years ago. The 6.2 motor and 10 speed transmission combo is excellent and will tow much more than your 2009 5.3.
