Last summer the wife and I went from Astoria down to the Redwoods. You are in for a great trip! Astoria has an interesting view point if you are in to that. There are also some nice bed and breakfast options.

You're driving a Vette!!! Why would you take the freeway unless you need to make time. But once again, you're driving a Vette!!! Driving time is what you want!!!! Astoria, hands down!!!! You want scenery and fun. Take the book tour of Portland. It's big city! You seen one, you seen most of them. Now the coast? That different. The salt air smells, the coast sights, the stops at the little diners or shops, that's what Corvette touring is about. Stop in Tillimook for cheese and ice cream and meet a cow, then head for Lincoln City and maybe an old covered bridge! If you get far enough south, take Hwy 1 instead of 101. Your Vette will thank you! And your pictures will look much better afterwards.

Yep, I agree that the Astoria route would be preferable to Portland. Portland is one of my favorite places, but not the sort of place for a road trip.
Saying that, the Astoria route, then down 101 all the way to California, and beyond, is a challenge. If I was doing it, I think I'd go to Portland and out to Lincoln City via 99W and, what, 18? That will take you right past the Evergreen Museum which is a must-see if you love airplanes.
I much prefer the drive on 101 south of Lincoln City. The further south you travel on 101, the prettier the coast becomes. If you want an idea of a place to stay, consider the Mill, a casino/hotel in Coos Bay. If you sing up for their players club and gamble enough to make the requisite number of points, you can get a really good rate on a nice room. There are no shortage of places to stay on the coast however so just take your time. Your best selction though is probably going to be in the Lincoln City or Newport areas.
If you head further south inot California, consider getting off 101 near Leggett and cut over to Hwy 1. It's a beautiful drive. Takes time though as it's a two lane highway. Drive it all the way to San Francisco if you have the time.
Now you've put me in the mood for a road trip.
Have fun and drive safely.

I'm going on a road trip down to California myself over Memorial weekend. Here are a couple of threads I started on the topic. They may give you some ideas of roads to travel.
Roads I should travel while going through Oregon?
Good roads in Northern California?

And if you really like airplanes, you can take a side trip and head east back towards McMinnville and visit the Evergreen Air Museum which is home to the Spruce Goose (Howard Hughes' 6-engined wood transport) and a wide variety of aircraft including some excellent examples of WWII aircraft. Here's their website: www.sprucegoose.com
To get there from the coast, take Oregon Highway 18 just a couple miles before you get into Lincoln City. The museum is on that highway and is about 50 miles. If you are returning via I-5, you can visit on the way back. Just take the exit going to McMinnville and follow the signs.

make sure you buy gas in Astoria or Warrenton as the gas in some of the smaller towns on the coast is quite high. Fred meyer in Warrenton or Safeway in Astoria are about the lowest price. Also Costco in Warrenton next to Freds is compeditive. Most places will let covette owners pump their own gas if you ask. Make sure you spend money in Seaside as we love tourist dollars.
