I live in Washington and was visiting in Idaho. I saw a Corvette that had a really cool Corvette vanity plate. (Follow the link to see the Corvette plate).
I see a lot of differently designed plates on Washington cars so why can't the Corvette owners in Washington get together and create a design like Idaho did? Or... simply steal Idaho's design...
IIRC, Idaho issued the plate as a commerative for the 50th Anniversary. I saw some of the plates when we stopped in Boise on the early leg of the 50th Anniversary Caravan.
DOL has an application procedure to create a special license plate. Read about it here.
It looks like no applications will be processed/accepted until July of 09 and once approved, it still takes Legislative approval for a new plate design. And you have to meet the criteria for a group or organization. A plate just for Corvettes probably does not meet the DOL criteria for a special plate.
Because the word Corvette, the logo, or possible even images of Corvettes, are trademarked by GM, the design would have to be licensed by GM and I would think that would have to be dne through DOL and/or the Legislature.
Yes, that would be sweet....but like one member stated, may be tough with the Chevrolet/GM trademark, could be quite a challenge....I'm "thumbs up"...definately...
Windy City Corvettes of Illinois has/had a plate.
Has a front 1/4 view of a C5 / C6 red coupe.
LAND OF LINCOLN
I got one from a guy and it shows no sign of ever
being installed. # 17 Dated 2005
A Maryland club also had/has one. I don't have one.
When I was with Sub Vets (several years ago) they wanted to have a plate for Submarine Veterans in Oregon. It's been a while and the price must have changed (as in gone higher) but you needed 35 or so people that would sign up for the plate at 100.00 each and you would have to keep the plate for a certain amount of years (can't remember that one).
The plate would have a set of dolphins (as in submarine insignia worn on uniform).
Similar but different.
In California, there is a Fund called 10-99 which benefits families of fallen state troopers. It costs $500 to join and the license plate frame in back gains the appreciation of CHP officers, if you know what I mean.
There is a WA state plate for fallen Law enforcement and I can't help but wonder if paying into the fund and having that plate will garner any sympathy from WA officers in key moments?

I've wondered about this myself. As a sidenote, the first time I noticed one of these "Law Enforcement Memorial" was on Bruce McCaw's Bentley coupe. It was #001 and while I've known Bruce to be a generous giver to such associations and causes, also couldn't help but notice the radar detector mounted on the windshield.
Whether or not it helps or at least makes the difference with an officer thinking about writing a ticket or not, I think it's probably a worthy cause.
In addition to the question of potential mitigation of a traffic stop, it brings to mind these occasional calls I get from someone identifying themselves as a representative of some Law Enforcement group trying to sell me tickets to a kids' carnival or some such. I think those are a scam. But then I see some cars and trucks with what looks to be a Washington State Trooper insignia decal on their vehicle's back window.
DOL has a special plate review board that determines what plates get approval. Info here. There is a link that tells how to submit a request for a special plate design.
As far as the LEM plates, anyone can buy one and this link describes the program. These plates get you a tax deduction and it could be that some people care more about the deduction than the program that helps families of fallen LEO's.
I've also seen the WSP decals on the back windows on cars and you get one by donating to the WSP Trooper's Association. I don't think it's any good at all when it come to talking your way out of a ticket from the WSP. You're on your own there.....
