Drove home normally.
Parked in the driveway and shut down to move the wife's car out of the way.
Get back in to start, turn key, and everything goes dead.
I can hear relays clicking near the fuse box. The horn made a pathetic little sound when I bumped it. A couple of times, the tach/speedo started to swing, but then died back. I charged the battery for a bit, but that didn't seem to help.
In searching the forum, this seems to be a symptom of a suddenly dieing battery. I guess I'll spend tomorrow morning getting a replacement.
Anybody have any suggestions on the cause, or where to get a battery in the Puyallup or Spanaway area?
03, I had to replace my 01 last year, and should have done it the year before. It could be it's time. You can also have the output of your alternator checked.
If you don't drive the car regularly, and if because of that the battery has gone 'flat' in the garage, it's probably just a dead battery.
The best price I found, unless you're going for looks, is Bret Chev in Renton.

Then I suspect the baattery like the others have said. I have had batteries right off the shelf that have had dead cells. They work fine for a while and will short out during thetime it takes to run in to the store and back. Come back out and it's dead. I have had 2 C5's and when I bought each car, I immediately replaced the battery with a red top from Costco. Both cars had the stock battery and were near the end of their lives anyway. Good luck.
In your owners manual they forewarn that your $50+k car won't start if you don't drive it every 2-3 weeks .... and the stealership suggested buying a battery tender devise to keep it charged! The little OEM battery won't stand running down more than once or twice before you must replace it with another one of their recommended weak little batteries. GM was obviously aware of this problem with the car and 'designed' the Mickey Mouse emergency unlock system so you can get into the car to replace the battery. Unfortunately, the cheapo lock over the license plate on mine is jammed so I can't even get into the car. Oh for the days when we actually had door and ignition keys and locks and no rocket science computers.
I've spent considerable time on several forums trying to find out what battery to buy but everyone seems to have a different opinion about who has the perfect battery. This isn't fun.
I had it checked at Pep Boys and the dealer.
Bad battery. 12.47 volts according the machine at Pep Boys.
Put a new AC Delco in and it fired right up.
Hopefully, this one lasts 5 years again.
I'm still amazed/disappointed that it can fail with zero warning.
I second the Red Top from Costco. My '03's battery went at 18,000 miles and less than 3 years of age. My '06's battery hurled me into a whold new realm of dead battery blues. I've gone to using Griot's Garage Battery Managers. They are pricey but seem more advanced than my simple Battery Tenders for my other rig.
AFROB........brudda,..........ya,... oddly enough, I myself ran a "thread" on this exact,....eh,...."Issue" about a couple of months back. My deal was I bought a brand new "Yelow top" (damn near 2 bills!) and it has died on me three times in less than a year!!! Now, you will hear all about not driving the car enough but,.........the original battery lasted SIX YEARS and started EVERY TIME even *12 degrees no sweat????? I certinly did not drive the car any more or less then. I had made up my mind to take it back (thank god I purchased it at COSTCO ) but I have just been too busy! I remember the words from the local expert,(Mr. Peabody) you should have bought a "Die hard" !!! I think I will!!!
After reading about some of the problems folks were having with the Optima, I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much.
I figured the first battery lasted 5 years. That's why I went with another AC Delco. Time will tell, I guess.
Got it at Friendly Chevrolet in Puyallup, by the way.
