Hello all - Looks like Uncle Sam is wanting me to live in Alaska soon, I have a 02 C5 that I plan on towing behind my truck (04 Nissan Titan 4x4) and I was curious if anyone else has made this trip towing a vette, and if they could give any words of advice or point me in the direction of resources etc.
I plan on being there in Jun 09, so I have some time to prepare and get what I need.
Some initial questions I have:
Drive the whole way or take the Ferry? Pros and Cons of each?
Best way to protect the vette during the tow? I don't think I will be able to afford an enclosed trailer, so should I cover her or ?
I wouldnt drive the Alaskan ukon hiway in the spring early summer months. there might be snow in some places. Depending on where you will be locating at.
I was born up there but havent seen alaska in 27yrs.

Suggestions or lessons learned would be great.
Thanks, I appreciate the help

I would neven think about towing anything up that HWY...Take the Ferry out of Bellingham Washington, YES there is a ferry system that runs all the way up....Check out this link!
I would take the ferry. Why put all of that stress on your pickup. I think it will cost less than driving and buying gas and you'll be more relaxed once you arrive.
Lucky dog! I've been considering the same transportation question for almost 20 years (if I was ever PCSd up there.)
Excluding the route (i.e., ALCAN, ferry to Haines or Skagway + road or ferry for nearly all the way), I think I'd pay the bucks and separately ship the 'Vette.
FYI, a former supervisor of mine PCSd to Clear AFS south of Fairbanks in April a number of years ago. He took the ferry to Haines and then drove his full-size Ford Bronco the remaining 800 miles or so. It wasn't too bad of a journey per his story and the video he shot. On his subsequent PCS, he drove the ALCAN the whole way back to the CONUS.
If possible, please post your transport decision and subsequent journey story. Best of luck!
I wouldn't put a cover on my Vette due to the fact of wind and grit getting under the cover and nicely sanding your paint, also the cover will wear on the paint when it's flapping in the wind at all the stress points that the cover renders over ... just my 2 cents ... Safe travels to you and yours !
