Default problems with my C4

Ok first off if I do decide to take the car in to the dealership, I dont want to hear the bytching lol.

That said.

Everyonce in a while my C4 (90 M6 vert) will not start. I have battery, everything comes on, when you turn the key, Nothing, No clicking no clacking Nothing, I still have lights & radio, but nothing from the engine compartment (sort of like the clutch isnt being pushed????). Then out of no where, she will just start. you ingage the cluch & turn the key & she will start.

Now the funny thing about this is it will run fine for anywhere from Days, to months with out having problems then it will show up & normally only happen once. then not have that problem again.

Now the last time it did it before today, was last week. & gages cleared (trip, mileage all that cleared, like someone disconnected the battery, but I kept the radio stations.)

Its really starting to tick me off because normally it will happen at work, when I just want to get the flip out of there & get away before the busses come to pick up the kids.

could it be the safety switch on the clutch?

another thing that I have noticed over the last couple weeks, is just before it shows up, it becomes harder to shift. I mean really have to put your arm in to shifting it, where normally you can shift this car with a finger.

Sounds like the clutch switch could be suspect, binding...out of adjustment... also I had something similar one time, and it was a "dodgy" ignition switch, not the key, but the linked remote electric switch it operates, as I recall the switch slides as You turn the key and can be problematic.

Sounds like perhaps you are having an issue with the VATS (vehicle anti theft system). Do you have another ignition key to try?

Not necessarily.

Mine would do it off and on as well, and its an auto.

We ordered new keys for it and the only time I ever had the problem again was when it was raining really hard and I got moisture on the key.

I had a problem like this. I thought it was the VATS so I bought a VATS bypass but that didn't solve the problem.

There were 3 or 4 wires that were together and bolted to the car as a ground near the starter and the bolt holding these was loose. When the engine was cold you could turn the key and sometimes it would take a second or two before the engine would crank over and other times it would crank right away.

When the engine was hot, it acted just as yours is now, and other times with the engine hot it would start right up.

Happened to me as well. I had to replace the key cylinder and get new keys - no longer have the issue.
