Very sad indeed. We are avid regulars watching the show and it feels like a personal loss. God bless Phil and his family...it must be very difficult for them, as well as the entire crabbing community.

I saw him at the last of summer in Kenmore. I grew up in Dutch Harbor and lived on that rock for 7 years. For many, these men are nothing more than tv stars. To us, they are people of unique courage and friends.

He was a good guy for the most part, I knew him pretty decent and we worked on a lot of projects together. As far as captains from the show, he was always better than most others to work with.
He blatantly disregarded everyone's wishes and doctors orders by going out to sea and being at severely high risk of a stroke. He continued his bad habits and traveled hundreds of miles into the middle of the sea to St. Paul Island where he had a stroke.
St. Paul Island is literally a rock with a fish/crap processing facility and a VERY small aleut village.
Not a good place to have anything go wrong when your nearest hospital is hundreds of miles away over sea.
He will be missed and we have setup a few events in his honor. Perhaps since he was a corvette owner as well (his c6 z06 never did beat my wee little c5 as he put it, in a freeway race), we should have a ride in his tribute this summer.
RIP Phil
