I called them about this and they said yes it's true. I also asked if they share any of this information with insurance companies, and they said yes they do with certain companies that they have agreements with, State Farm being one of these. I asked specifically if they track vehicle speed and they said they don't, but they have GPS tracking, which would give them ground speed as well.

I don't know about you all, but this is big brother out of control. I currently have 2 vehicles with OnStar and I'm seriously considering cancelling both. I almost cancelled today, but I've learned not to make decisions when I'm mad. So I'll think it over and decide later in the week.

Thought you all shoudl know.

Take care,
Dave

Our insurance companies are probably reading this post........
As are our employers.

No ONSTAR in the C5!
when I bought my Cobalt SS/SC, I said no. There is no unit in the car.

BTW... The 87 does not have On Star... It just has the random electrical gremlin option. LOL

I get so tired of the misinformation that surrounds this subject. Here is the new agreement in total:

http://www.onstar.com/tunnel-web/web...t-2011-USE.pdf

About the only changes is they will be collecting information even if you are cancelled. Understand OnStar data is only a snapshot in time, they do not monitor 24/7, that today is impossible. The data they sell has no personnel information associated to it. All it says is at this date, at this time, at this location an OnStar equiped car was running this speed.

Why would they want to sell this data, there is money to be made. Advertizing companies will use the data to place billboards. Police?, easy where to setup patrols. Insurance, none of the data will do them any good. Can they get specific data about you, not without a court order and they are not going to get that to track your driving habits.

Oh, we promise we won't gather or sell any data once the service is turned off. "Wink"

Just like the work surveys we take on line that are "strictly confidential"

Uh huh.

No maam, that's really yellow primer. Trust me!

She forgot to mention all the folks that might want to purchase the information from her to track your driving habits.

I compare it to an internet tracking cookie only potentially much more expensive.
