Sounds like you may have a problem with the slave cylinder. Do a search for "Drill mod" in the C5 section. Sticking clutch pedal and/ or hard shifting in to 1st or reverse is one indicator of this. I'm actually having this same problem with the clutch assembly on my 01 SS. I'm going to be putting in an aftermarket slave and master along with a new used LS7 clutch.

Or he may need to just flush out the clutch hydraulics (I know this is an issue with C5 Z06s but not sure about standard coupes)
Do a search in the C5 forums about using a turkey baster to do it

Agreed. Flushing the fluid can only help so much though and if it wasn't done regularly from the outset the hydraulics can be gummed up pretty bad by now.
It's a very common issue with many 6 speed Vette's and Camaro/ Firebird/ TA's, built from 97 through 2004. Even my 02 Z06 had an occasional sticky pedal.
On my SS I recently went through a quart of fluid flushing after every couple of days hoping it would do the trick but no such luck. I flushed on and off the first 20k on the factory clutch and then more often to 30k and my only option now is to remove and replace parts.

We too have an '02 Z06 and I do the fluid changeout at the first sign of hard shifting as the OP describes. Usually this works out to every year or so as the Z, while a daily driver, isn't driven all that many miles in a year.
