Default (Off topic) Taurus Handguns

I'm looking at purchasing another handgun and am interested in the Taurus semi-auto's. Does anyone out here know much about them? I heard that they might be having some financial trouble but can not be sure about that. Couldn't find anything in print on it. Looking for some input and hopefully some first hand experience on them. Also, any other recommendations of 9mm's would be greatly appreciated. PM me if needed. Thanks.

Taurus is pretty good stuff but exactly which model you're interested in depends on what your plans for it is.

Gonna concealed carry it? Gonna just use it for home defense and range use?

Taurus now builds very good quality firearms but there are a ton out there in 9mm that are also excellent since the CC market has taken off in the last decade. As Ken said, the intended purpose will make a big difference on the one you select; house only, plinking at the range, concealed carry, etc. There's an excellent shop up in Lynnwood that has a great selection and very knowledgeable employees.

I haven't heard anything about Taurus being in financial difficulty. They are introducing new handguns so that should be an indication they are going OK.

There are lots of good pistols out there in 9mm. S&W, Sig, Springfield Armory, Ruger, and others all have good products. As stated, can you further define what it is you are wanting to do?

One of my carry pistols is a Taurus Millennium Pro in .45ACP. Very reliable, rugged and well built. The 10+1 capacity doesn't hurt either for a small pistol. Right now, the only 9mm I own is a Ruger P89. This pistol is built like a tank and after something like 4000 rounds, it has never once failed to go BANG.

My carry weapon of choice is a Kahr CW9 although I've been sorta kicking the idea around about replacing it with a Millennium but I have dies for reloading 9mm and tons of brass

I've got two Sig Sauer P239's that I bought new and have never been fired. One is .40 SW caliber and the other is 9 mm. I'm looking to sell one of them if you are interested. It would include a leather IWB leather holster at a great price ($500). If interested let me know.

As stated, not enough info....I plan on using mainly for the range and home defense. I currently have a Bersa 380, Bersa 22LR and a 22LR revolver. I want to get a 9mm, compact but not real small. When I do carry, I use the 380. I have been looking at the Taurus's, FN, CZ-75, Sig Pro SP 2022 along with a couple others. So many to chose from. What store is located in Lynnwood? Thanks for the input, keep it coming. Maybe it will help me to make a discission.

My wife has a Taurus 9mm semi-auto, it is a little too small a frame for my hand. It shoots very well and I would buy another one. I use a Colt govt. 1911 45 acp. It fits me better and I like the 22lr conversion kit for shooting lots of rounds.

Not really a question that can be solved on the Corvette forum. Go to a store you like and hold a few. Look for a trigger action you are comfortable with, a safety situation that makes sense to you, and a grip that feels good in your hand. I can safely conceal a 1911, but I don't. I could put holes in paper with an H&K, but I'd rather not. For a specific set of requirements and a specific owner there are several good choices, but you won't know what they are until you get your hands around them.

A number of ranges, like our local Clackamas County Sheriff's Public Safety Training Center rents a *huge* selection of handguns to try at their range. Since they maintain them, they also know which ones are more reliable than others. It's great information.

In my personal opinion, I like the Taurus triggers, but I only reload .45acp at the moment, and I think H&K makes a better grip for my smaller hands with HK45.

A great local forum for discussion of firearm questions is http://www.northwestfirearms.com/content/

Happy shooting.

Once you decide on a gun I recommend visiting Davidson Gun Gallery's website. You can find the best price in your area. Gallery of guns

I recently picked up a Kahr CW40. Great size for concealed and it packs a punch.

I'd agree with Visceri - you've gotta give them a try before you narrow it down. Wades has a prety good selection, and its not very expensive to rent multiple (unlimited option?) guns.

Like c4cruiser, my Ruger (P93DC) is an extremely well built, reliable firearm. Last time out with a bunch of guys, the Ruger was the one that got the most "I like that gun" comments. Not bad for a really reasonably priced gun.

If I were picking up another 9mm, I'd efinitely be looking at the Springfield XDM - really loved the feel and fit of that one, with the adjustable backstraps. But Just picked up a new AR15, so no new toys now.

Check out these pistols. The model 111 series is the same family as my MP145

Taurus also has a new line called the PT2011 and 9mm is one choice of caliber.

From this, it sounds that you may be after a mid-size pistol with something like a 4 inch barrel. For home defense, 9mm will work fine, but so would any larger caliber like a .40 S&W or even a .45ACP. There are arguments ad nauseum regarding whether or not a certain caliber has suitable stopping power. Having said that, my home defense pistol is my Springfield Armory 1911 (with my Remington 870 as the big backup).

They all work and there is a wide variety of ammo designed specifically for home defense use. Between Hornaday, Winchester, Remington, and Federal defensive rounds, there is no reason why any of the above calibers would not work. Your choice of pistol and caliber is going to come down to what fits the best in your hand, how it shoots, and finally price.

One thing to keep in mind with regard to some of the real compact pistols is they are not really suitable for ongoing range days. Going to a range monthly just to keep your skills sharp is important, but the really small pistols aren't really made for shooting thousands of rounds. I'll shoot my PT145 on a monthly basis, but typically no more than 50 rounds. I reload for .45 so I can shoot reduced loads and not have to worry too much about recoil. I'll also shoot 10-15 rounds to maintain proficiency in getting reasonable group size with my defensive ammo.

Find a shop that has a range where you can try out different pistols. Some ranges have rental guns too. Off course there are gun forums for just about any brand. And checking out Davidson's for deals is a great suggestion. I have been buying my new pistols from a small shop in Elma (shameless plug: East County Guns) and their website has a link to Davidson's where you can see prices. They also offer weekly and monthly specials with some good deals.

As all have said, depends on what you want to do with it.

I have been subscribing to Gun Tests magazine for a few years. This is the Consumer Reports of guns. They have tested a number of guns, including pistols and revolvers. If you'd like to check out some of the Gun Test results, PM me and we'll set up some time.

Go with a Sig or a Glock... I have many of both and they are great guns... I was never really a fan of the Taurus or Berrettas, but to eachs own...

My next will be a HK USP Compact in 9mm or a HK P2000...

Well, it seems I might be the only Glock fan. I just picked up my first gun, a Glock 19. It is a 9mm and fits me very well. Not to mention it is small enough to carry. I looked at quite a few different guns, many that have been listed above. After shooting most of them I decided on the Glock. Go out and rent them and then make a decision.

I've owned 2 Taurus semi-autos, the PT92 and a PT1911. Both have been very good, I use the PT1911 I have for concealed carry (I am 6"1') so concealing a full size handgun for me is no big deal.

I have put about 1000 rounds with my PT1911 and only had one jam, using the stock mags, which I tossed into the $hit can and replaced with Wilson Combat 8 rounders, nothing since then. Mine has the light rail, which has a Streamlight TLR2 light/laser combo attached. Reduces muzzle flip quite a bit, so it is easy to do double taps even with +P ammo.

I would recommend an Springfield Armory XDm for a medium framed semi-auto. My wife has one, in .40S&W and it is a damn fine little gun.
