Me and my family is going to be taking vacation in Alasaka from August 6th to the 14th. We are going to be flying into Anchorage and staying in Seward for 2-3 days... I'll probably do some fishing with my son but need to figure out what to do for the other days AND where to stay....
Do you guys have any recommendations?

I haven't been there, but the Wife and Oldest Son went last year for Bro-N-Law's wedding. They dug the Anchorage Zoo, the Glacier outside of Seward is awesome, you can hike all over them. Also a Tram ride up Alyeska (Ski resort) is cool. Also nice sight seeing boat rides out of Seward is cool.
The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center http://www.alaskawildlife.org/ is pretty close to the Alyeska Resort (between Anchorage and Seward) and worth seeing. Also the restaurant at the top of the tram is extremely good. Depending on your budget, a helicopter ride to the glacier, with a dog sled ride while up there, will be a forever memory. There are several city tours that can be a good starting point to give you ideas what to do next. Enjoy!
The chopper to a glacier is great depending on budget, the zip line rides in the forest are a blast too. Varoius fishing options a winner if you want to get into some prime territory, rivers etc. Enjoy.

There are an endless number of things to do and see.
Thanks for all the recommendations! My son is 12 and he loves to fish. Last year we were in Oregon and was hoping to land some nice Salmon but it didn't happen So maybe this year in Alaska we'll bring in some nice Halibut and Salmon
When we went halibut fishing in Seward we went to the docks when the boats came in to see who had good catches and booked with one of them, it worked out well.
I live in Alaska. Been here for about thirty years - on and off.....
Fishing for flat fish is pretty boring. I hate it. With the price of charters nowadays, it's generally a lot less expensive to just go buy some fillets from the cannery. Salmon fishing is funner, more action. The funnest is fishing for kings on the rivers, nothing like it really.
I do not live in Seward, been there a few times. Nice town. Can't really recommend much, as I'm not terribly familiar with the town.
Be prepared to get raped with hotel costs. They are stupid expensive in Anchorage. You'd be better off looking to B&B's. I get discounted corporate rates, and still ended up paying $140 the other night, and it's the "off" season. August is the "on" season and rates are about double.
Feel free to shoot me a PM or email with any questions you may have. Or ask here and I'll respond so others can see.... The state is just soooooo big, with so much to see and do, it's tough to recommend things.

Thanks for the recommendations We're actually staying in B&Bs only as your right the hotels are very expensive. Thanks for the input on flat fish.
BTW, if we catch alot of fish... how do people transport it back home? We live in CA.
You'd want to vacuum seal it, freeze it, then throw it in a cooler and check it as baggage. I just brought back a cooler full of fish and pig from Hawaii that way. There is most likely a business in Seward that does this, if you can not do it yourself. There is one in Valdez, and several in Anchorage.
When we were in Seward the Skipper of our boat steered us to a place that took care of our fish. It was frozen and packed in sturdy styrofoam containers with frozen ice packs and were ready to fly back with us.
Were those packs dry ice?? I ask as most airlines frown on anything that may melt. Best to check with them before lugging a box or cooler to the counter. Also make sure that whatever you use can be X-rayed. If not, they will open it up and TSA may or may not re-tape it.
They were approved for flying. I think with all the fishermen and the amount of fish they have it pretty well sorted out. Still not a bad idea to check.
