Default Front Plates

Subject: Be aware: No front license plate could mean a $124 ticket!

Recently a representative of the Redmond Police Department stopped by Barrier Motors to let us know that Bellevue, Redmond, Snohomish, and Kirkland police departments will no longer be flexible regarding vehicles without the front license plate installed. Currently, Washington State law requires license plates to be prominently displayed on the front and rear of all vehicles. While this law has been in place since 2011, it has not, until now, been strictly enforced.

As part of Mercedes-Benz of Bellevue's commitment to do more for our customers, we wish to make sure that all our customers are aware of the importance of the front license plate. From this point forward, if your vehicle does not have a front plate you will receive a $124 ticket.

Sincerely,
Mercedes-Benz of Bellevue

I guess this is fair warning.....I'm going to get mine on before RTC on the 5th.

Glad I don't drive a Mercedes-Benz from Bellevue.

Got a ticket for no front plate while driving thru a speed trap in Tacoma. My 8500 X50 alerted me to the trap but the motorcycle cop noticed my plate was missing.

Contested the ticket and brought pics showing the plate had been installed. My judge dismissed the ticket.

Sounds like area budgets need a little help.

There have been attempts in the Legislature to do away with the front plate but the WSP lobbies heavily against any bill that would allow just a single plate. Yet the Legislature passed a bill this year to do away with the 7-year mandatory plate replacement requirement. The original law was something the WSP wanted.

A number of years ago, a friend got a no front plate ticket while driving his '67 Chevelle through a small town. He got pulled over and the cop wrote him the ticket. The car has collector plates so he only got one plate. He couldn't convince the cop about the law and he had to take a day off to go to court to get the ticket pulled.

Didn't have one on our C6 here in OR. Put the plate on front right dash and never had a problem. The C7 is all set up for a plate (with a "bend" to follow bumper) Will probably put it on-vanity plate of Ken's HAM call letters.

Well actually, it's not a vanity plate. It's a separate category Amateur Radio plate.

Besides, all who know me know I have no vanity

Interesting that different PD's seem to react differently to the law: I live in Woodinville and frequent the downtown Starbucks on a regular basis early in the morning along with what sometimes seems like half of the Woodinville Police Department (basically King County Sheriff Officers). They have talked with me about my GS convertible (has no front plate) and none of them has ever suggested that I need to put the plate on.

When I had my C5 (10 years without a plate) I was stopped once by the WSP in Yakima and they (there were 4 WSP cars in a speed trap along highway 97) noticed that there was no plate but were not too concerned about it - didn't even get a speeding ticket!

I'm going to take a chance on the $124 and not do anything until I actually get caught.

This state cracks me up, they are so cheap they don't use reflective paint on the roadways (wet and very dark roadways) yet they don't care if you fix something, they just want to fine you till you do. In CA anything like no plate is a fix-it ticket, fix it, have a cop verify and sign the ticket and they wipe it off. A minor $15 charge.

Got pulled over last Jan for expired tags...I was what? Sure enough. I never got any notice though. In CA they send several. Cop mentioned he hasn't gotten one in years. And its a silly $209 fine. Guess the Cop (Who was from some town way up north of redmond) felt bad though, he never turned in the ticket (they have 4 days) so it was never in the system. And no mention of my lack of front plate.

I stopped running front plates 25 years ago, only once got a ticket. Some ***** cop on Christmas Eve in a Target parking lot, tickets the Wifes Honda Minivan....he must have been some sad SOB....

Front plates help to make your car an easier target for LIDAR.

Without one, it's much harder to get a lock

I have had no front plate on my 02 Z06 since 2011 and have put 20,000 mostly city miles on it since then. I got one speeding ticket in Marysville (40 in a 30) and did he did not even check for a front plate. I drive all over Everett every day. I have been at a light across from Everett Police often in an intersection and never got a 2nd look and its not like my car hides in traffic.

There is a BMW at work that had a decal made, that is a photo of his front plate, that is on his bumper. At first glance you don't notice it but when from the side you notice that it doesn't stick out. Says he hasn't had any issues with the police.
Me I run the plate, I travel lots of miles and don't need to get them a reason to pull me over…

This is going to sound like a "My dog ate it" story but when I bought mine from Lee Johnson, it didn't have one and they never gave it to me.

I am with you. Picked mine up my CG C7 from Good Chev in Renton TODAY and it did not have place to put a front plate and never will. Pulled over twice (no tickets) in the C6 and the plate never mentioned. BTW the C7 is a dream to drive!

Did you mean Norpoint?

That's pretty close to home. I drive that road several times a week but have luckily never seen any cops hiding there yet.
