my 67 firebird is @ the body shop. he called me the other day & said he looked up the color I was wanting, 03 "anniversary red". & he told me that he can paint it that color BUT if it gets damaged, scratched, ect down the road it is difficult to repair because it is 3 stage paint. so I had him look at the 06-07 "Monterey red" & same things, 3 stage. but now he did tell me that in 03 Pontiac grand prix had a color near perfect match to the "anniversary red", & it is only 2 stage paint. my question is does anyone know of a color that is a real close match to the colors I am looking at?
You should go with the paint you want,, Your painter sounds lazy or unsure of himself.. Three stage paint jobs are not a big deal for a professinal painter.. Its what they do and they should also be able to make a flawless undectable repair as well.. If he cant do the above, find a new painter
I would have to question if you have ever tried repairing a tri color. These paint jobs are extremely difficult to match up because the final color is totally dependent on the amount of material put down. This of course comes from gun settings, reduction rates, dry times between coats etc. Try repairing a HOK candy paint job; not gonna happen for the same reasons but that should not deter you from getting the finish you want. I look at it differently than BondoKing; your painter is just making sure you understand the type of job you are looking at; hopefully avoiding dissatisfaction down the road if something does happen. This is the same process we have to go through when a customer brings us a car wanting a candy job. We have to stress the fact that the paint job can not be repaired so that they understand there will be no repairs on the job; the only option is an entire repaint in most cases. It's simply good practice to run through this stuff with the customer before the job is started.
BondoKing my body man is far from lazy. I am willing to bet that he is 1 of the best on the east coast. he has had several cars featured in magazines because of his paint jobs. Deakins that is what he has done is advise me of the problems of the colors I have chosen, if anything happens yes it can be repaired BUT it may take up to a complete repaint to get it correct, or a lot of trial & error to get it to match. verses a 2 stage paint can be touched up & blended to match.
Absolutely, and by all means, go with the color you originally chose. We only use the House of Kolor paints in our shop so I don't know what the paint you listed looks like or I would try to offer up some suggestions. Myself and many others love to see great, very complicated paint jobs out on the road; even if they have some scratches and rock chips since we know that these things are unavoidable, and often not easily fixed! Post some pics of how this bad boy comes out, you'll love it!
