I have a 92 conv, The paint is blistered and peeling off down to the fiberglass. I was going to strip the paint down to the fiberglass. I was told that even the best primer and paint would in time peel off the fiberglass if the body was not gel coated before it was primed and painted. I am not a paint and body man, I have been in business for 12yrs, doing custom cabinets and woodworking. Most of the material I use is for metal and wood and is thin like automotive paint. I plan to try doing my car, I was just wondering about the primer or gel coat. I would be grateful for any help guys, I will probably be using Dupont, or PPG from a local automotive paint place. IMO, I would use either:
- epoxy seal and then a urethane primer or
- polyester primer and possibly urethane primer if needed
I believe gelcoat was the best alternative before urethane
primers came along. They are harder to sand and can crack easier.
There is no truth to the 'gelcoat first or it will peel off' crap.
Thanks guys, I dont know the history of the car but, From the way is looks it was repainted by someone that didn't have a clue what they was doing. Thank you fellas
If the car is peeling really bad you might save yourself some time by going to the car wash or get a high pressure washer and blow off as much paint as you can
Just make sure you seal it with epoxy once you have it stripped and before you put on any 2k primers or polyester primers.. No need for gel coat.. If you follow Barryk's advice you wont have any issue's with the paint job
