I have a 60 gallon air compressor at 11.3 CFM. It's a husky air compressor from home depot. I need to buy a paint gun to spray high build primers, clear coats, basecoats and primers. Do I need to have two guns, one for primer and one for the clear/basecoat? I was thinking about buying a cheap primer gun and then when its time to spray the base coat and clear coat, I'll buy the GFG-670.
Should I get two guns or one?
If you recommned me getting one gun for the entire job, which one should I get (again, it needs to spray high build primer, regular primers, basecoat, clear coat...)?
If you recommend me getting two separate guns, which primer gun do you suppose I get to spray primers and high build primers? If I go this route, my second gun will be the devilbiss GFG-670 for the base coat/clear coat. I need to buy a primer gun though...what do you recommend?
PS: I posted on the autbody forum, none of those guys responded, even after several days! Hopefully you guys will.
I'm about as far from a paint expert as you can get, but from everything I have read you will probably need more than 1 gun for everything you want to do. The biggest concern is with the clearcoats. Most clears are highly toxic and require special (read Expensive) breathing apparatus. Screwing around with paints can get you disabled or dead pretty quickly so do your homework before filling that first paint cup.
High build primer has more solids (high build) and the nozzle needs to have bigger holes for that than a base/clear gun. I've got an old old Sears pressure pot gun for primer and a snap-on gun for color.
AND 72LS1Vette is right. The isocyanates in the new paints can make you dead/disabled very quickly. Imron, for example, hardens in your lungs and stays there. It won't come out. The old timey laquers would eventually get out. Be careful.

I guess a lot of us me included dont know about the paint and body section. I have a post over there it took awhile but i have got good replys. I just attempted to shoot my 77 with the new 2K hi build primer. I used A hvlp with a 1.7 tip and it would not shoot the new primer because it was too thick. I have to bump up to a 2.0 tip. Your compressor should run your guns with no problem. If you use one gun you will need a couple of tips. 1.3 or 1.4 for base coat clear coat and 1.8 or 2.0 for the hi build primers.
If you are considering doing your own paint work, I highly recommended you get Kevin's Tetz's videos. There are a lot of time consuming expensive mistakes you will likely make if you are going try to learn to paint on your own. Kevin will steer you in the right direction on everything from gun selection to safety. Here's a link.
You might recognize Kevin, he's one of the new host to the TV series on Spike called Trucks.
Hope this helps, Steve
Oh and yeah, you'll need two guns. High build primer will not spray from the same gun you will use for base and clear. The good news is you can get a cheap gun for high build primer as you're going to sand most of it off anyway so the finish isn't real important.

If you order the optional 1.8 tip with it you will be covered for just about anything you want to spray with maybe the exception of polyester stuff like SlickSand or Featherfill etc. Spray gun world/depot etc calls it their 1.8 woodworkers/auto primer special for an extra $35. If you plan on shooting polyester, then you are going to need a 2.2-2.5 gun like a SATA KLCP.
My Dad does painting for a living and uses a Sata. Its a very good gun. Im not sure of the exact model but its around $500 or so. Not the most expensive but with the right operator, it will put down a mirror finish. As far as primer, he uses the Sata with a 1.8 tip swapped in it or a cheap primer gun we picked up at northern. It was only $80 or so. If your just going to block sand it down anyway then the primer gun really doesnt matter. My .02
