I just shot a portion of my 93 using Dupont's Chromobase system. The color and clear went on well. I waited about four days and wet sanded with 1200 grit. As I was machine polishing with 3M's surface finisher, I noticed I got something that almost looks like chips in the clear coat. It doesn't look like I burned through. Rather it looks like the clear almost peeled up. I am going to sand the entire panel down with 600 grit and re-spray the base and clear. However I want to avoid this from happening again. Any suggestions??
First we need to identify the cause of the chips and I don't have enough info or a visual from your description to really nail the problem. I am visualizing very small scattered craters. It is possible that you removed dirt specs or moisture bubbles during wet sanding and created small craters in the void area. But when you also mention peeling, which tells me that larger areas are not adhering. Most clear coat adhesion problems where small to large areas lift, are due to excessive base coat film and/or not allowing the correct flash times, essentially applying too much product soon or bwaiting beyond the max time. You have a 30 minute to 24 hour window for applying clear. Always follow product usage details as written in the data sheets.
Thanks for the reply. The clips are fairly small maybe 1/8" by 1/4" some even smaller. They are only in the clear and not in the base. I think I may have let the buffing pad run too dry and if cut into the clear. I pulled off the door and re-sanded it with 400 grit. I am going to shoot two coats of base and then two coats of clear this afternoon. Hopefully with the door laying flat I can get nice even coats.
