Default Urethane wave....

Hello all. I have a white 88 Vette that I painted with PPG Deltron base and Concept clear. I color sanded with 1500, 2000 and then buffed 3m Perfect It II system. I'm very happy with the finished job....deep shine, straight flat panels.

Now, my father and I are doing a frame off resto on a '73 Stingray Coupe. Again, I used PPG Deltron and Concept...Mille Miglia Red. I've wet sanded using 1500, 2000 and this time 3000. All of the orange peel is gone and everything looks super flat. After buffing the hood, the finish is like glass and deep. But, I see little ripples in the clear, even though the surface is sanded flat.

I've read about what is called "urethane wave". I'm pretty sure this is what's going on here...every panel on the car was blocked until they were straight in prep for the paint. Can I go back and wet sand starting with 1000 and working my way up to remove the wave? I applied 3 GOOD coats of clear, so I'm sure I have plenty on the car.

Here's a few pics of my '88....I'll try to get a pic of the '73 posted...Thanks!

and here are the '73 pics....

if it's bad, I would block with 400 and reclear...it is very hard to get rid of just sanding and rebuffing....maybe it's just on a few panels...reduce the clear a little extra since you have plenty and go for flow!!!

I'd say you can't get the wave out by color sanding. The problem is, you can't tell when you've color sanded enough.

I'd leave it. It's probably only you that notices it anyway.

If you try to color sand it out, be prepared to re base/clear when you go through.

Putting it on too heavy is what causes it.

IF you are shooting todays high solid clears as they are intended to be sprayed, you will end up with some urethane wave.. Gun choice makes a large difference here as well.. as does flow coating it by, sanding with 320-600 with a hard block on the 600.. the 320 you can do dry with a foam pad, then spraying a couple more coats of clear.. Many choose to reduce the clear here to get it flatter and have less peel and wave.. Regardless, you will still have to sand it with aggressive paper afterwards to ensure flat wave free panels..

Also the more film build you get, the more wave you see straight out of the gun/.... Lots of variables, but it can be gotten rid of with work.. It is something that is dealt with on every show car that is worh a turd
