Default SMC resin

I ve never had any experiences with SMC resin, but with my 74 I was told I needed it for correct repairs. Anyway my local Orielly's had a quart in back. It looked old but they said it worked or I could bring it back so I thought why not. When I added the correct amount of the white cream hardner as supplied it turned the resin to a jelly. Is this suposed to happen. When I used any other resin it was always liquid. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Dont know, never used that particular one. I would use the modern materials that are supplied by Lord Fusor, and others. They are auto mixed epoxies and urethanes. Anything that uses a paste hardner is not a real SMC compatable material in my opinion.

I checked my work today and it dried very firm and looked like it worked. Just never had anything gel up like that before

If you used a liquid, it shouldn't gel up THAT quick, unless you added too much resin. I use Evercoat's SMC Resin, and it doesn't do that for at least 20 min. or more. If I want it to harden faster though, I add more resin...Now, if only there was a place to get it cheaper! It's about twice as expensive as regular!

There is no secret to SMC. Basically it is fiberglass but produced in moulds and with heat and therefor they used different materials. If you repair smc you have to use materials that are epoxy-based and then you will be ok.
