I was at a carshow this past Sunday and noticed that even though my paint is shiny as hell from wax, the paint and clearcoat needs alot of help. At 25 and an entrepreneur, a $10,000 paint job is out of the question but I want a high quality job. The car is taken off the road from October to April and I often spend my nights in the garage working on the car so I'm mechanically enclined.
So I ask,
(1) Proper painting requires all body panels to be taken off???
(2) Should the existing paint be stripped and is it easy to strip?
(3) How would the painter feel about an owner doing this prep work?
I'd probably want the company to re-install the body panels but then there-in lies a problem with the nuts and bolts that were removed by me.
Basically, I set aside $500 for new emblems, new splash guards and new side louvers (needed). I set aside $600 for speedlingere front mask and sideview mirror masks but if a body shop allowed me to do 60% of the prep, what am I still looking at to have my car repainted and fit professionally?
you may find a shop to shoot it for you but i doubt they will want to put it together for you. i do mostly older vettes and when i take a part off it gets cleaned painted and stored. i have a 62 that i'm putting together for the owner after having someone else tear it down. it will cost several thousand more because of trying to figure out what they did and where things are. i really did not want to do it but there was so much damage done taking it apart he knew they could not build it without destroying the paint job. good luck with it.

(1) No. the only panels that you might want to consider removing would be the doors. If you are keeping it the same color, this even this is not necessary.
(2) Don't strip it unless the car has already been repainted. It's hard to strip and I wouldn't recommend you do it unless you have an experienced friend guiding you along.
(3) Again, don't do the prep yourself unless you have an experienced friend guiding you. Proper prep is a learned procedure and extremely important to be done correctly to have a nice looking paint job.
I suggest finding a reputable shop that could do the whole job for you at around 4 to 5K.
Not saying you can't learn to do stuff yourself. But, it is obvious you are inexperienced and need to have help if you choose to do so.
im in the same boat with you bro, when i got my car the paint was peeling off, i dont have any money right now, im building the motor as we speak, but im sure gonna try! cant be that much different than painting fiberglass on the aircraft in the U.S.A.F besides the fact that its a magnet for all kinds of hair, junk, etc...... some guys ground out the frame with a chain. but if there is a hair within a 10 mile radius...it will find its way to your car!!!!!! gotta have a tight plastic tent around it. lots of sanding and clear coats!!
