Default 82 Head light install before paint

What is the opinion on painting with the light panels installed, or painting them off the car and installing after paint. My question and concern is damaging them after paint. After preping the body and light panels, would they come out better installing them before paint. Sounds confusing, but whats the best way?

I vote for on the car. Especially with a metallic paint. You want the paint on the light panels to be exactly the same as the surrounding panels.

And, like you say, why take a chance on damage after everything is painted.

I really don't see any advantage to painting them off the car anyway.

I personally would do them out of the car only for some serious concours car that needs to be perfect in every way. They can be reinstalled after paint, but it is dangerous. The factory painted them on the car. Thats good enough for most situations.

Thanks for the opinions. I think I might test fit them to see how much trouble it will be. This will be a good way to measure the amount of damage I might do. Who said body work was fun??????????????

Use the green 3M tape around the headlight holes and take your time. By test fitting, you'll see how much it takes to do it. I can see both sides of the answers given, it obviously has to be up to you and your confidence level.
