I am in the process of completing my restro on my 82 CE. It appears that there had been some type of repair on the front nose. I thought that the dips in the nose area was caused from the heat and sunlight, but after replacing the nose this is not the case. As I tighten up the nose the curved areas towards the middle are causing the urethane to cup in. Working on the nose trying to resolve this problem, we have noticed bondo across the fiberglass mating surface. Working on it again tonight I noticed that part of the problem might be from the bonding metal strips that bolts the cover to the car. It appears that as I tighten the nuts, that the bar starts to push upwards causing the cupping. I thought about taking off the metal plates and removing about 1/4" to see if that might help resolve the problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Is there a set angle that the fiberglass should be at to accept the bumper cover? This is all that stands in the way of painting my car, but I will not accept the nose dips on the bumper cover.
Here are pictures of the bumper cover on the car. I took out the factory metal attaching bars and installed the ones for fiberglass mounting. I'm not sure if this helped the problem, but it allowed me to have a little more flexibility while fitting. In the pictures you really can't see the cupping on the nose due to little refection from the primer. This is the best fit that we have gotton. We are going to wipe the bad placed on the fiberglass that weren't quite snug, to fill in the gaps. then we will remove the nose on Monday and reblock the repaired areas before priming. There is very little cupping left in the nose, maybe I'll leave it for the NCRS guys.
