PPG will tell you that once you open a can of dp Epoxy primer catalyst you have seven days to use it or loose it. Has anyone used it past the seven days and still have good results? And if so, how many days past.
Danny, although it may not be wise to admit I have used the catalyst past the seven day window. I have used it probably up to a couple of weeks without issue (generally on some of the more mundane things like chassis components) but I certainly cannot condone it. I have poured it into smaller containers and sealed up the cap with tape although I cannot state with any certainty whether that helps anymore than witchcraft.
That being said I do not use old catalyst on any really important projects as I have had a number of times with the catalyst causing paint problems either being old or using it past the window. If your project took a lot of time, you have to determine what your savings is and is it worth it? I try to avoid problems like the plague so I would not use it as a sealer coat over lets say 100 hours of block sanding. It just is not worth it. In my weekly routine time is precious. Good luck-Jim
When I repainted my rockers, I used my original can, probably 12 months old or more. The PPG rep I talked to said if it's opened and closed quickly and kept in a dark place, it'll last quite a while. He also said if it's still crystal clear, no worries, if it's cloudy, even q little bit - toss it.
That said, I new I'd be repainting my rockers again so I thought what the heck. If I was spraying a complete car and prepping it for a top notch paint job, I wouldn't have risked it as the saving wouldn't outweigh the risk.
