Default Another primer question

I have been reading the epoxy over laquer thread. Good stuff there. What I'd like to know is, what primer is on my 87. Ive been sanding about 100 paintjobs off the car and I'm getting down to thr factory black primer. Must be good stuff to last 21 years. What is it ? Do I take it all off ? When I stop sanding I plan on epoxy to start with.

Factory primer seldom fails but I can't answer your question of what type of primer it is, I would guess water based due to VOC regs from a manufacturing standpoint. We know that it is compatible with everything on the market today simply because of it's age. If it were mine, I would take it down the rest of the way to the smc and start fresh. I just think of the changing epa regulations in that era and the paint products being used were new, so I question the long term durability to survive your repaint. Remember the factory paint peeling failures in 1990-1991?

Did they have water base back in 87 ? Actually built in 86. Yes, I was thinking today, maybe go all the way. Sure would be nice if laquer thinner would take it off. May have to give that a try.
