I wish to buy a D/A sander with some gift cards. Lowes has a Kobalt 6" random orbital sander for about $90 but the letters D/A are not mentioned. Is random orbital the same as D/A?
DA is a shop term (dual action) meaning orbital and rotary from the same tool. National Detroit was the manufacturer that coined the term. National Detroit sanders are very good and a body shop standard. You can get a model DAQ like below for around $125 new on the internet from a tool warehouse and will last a lifetime for the home hobbyist.
You'll find if your going to use a DA much, get a palm sander DA. It is better balanced and easier on you. IngersallRand makes an excellent one for around $120. The palm sander won't have the long handle.
I saw this DA the last time I was in the local Harbor freight store. I need a DA for 1 and at most 2 project cars. Will this 'inexpensive' model do the job, or do I need to pay more for a better one?
