The clear coat on the rear bumper assembly on my '91 is peeling off in large flakes. The rest of the car, and the underlying paint on the rear appear to be OK.
Is repairing the clear coat something I can/should do at home? or best left to a body shop. I'm not very good with body work ;-) Thanks.

Some more information would help. Has the car been repainted? If a repaint, how long ago? If a repaint, do you know the materials/processes used?
There are several possible reasons for the clear coat coming off. The reason it is coming off may dictate the repair approach, so more information will help.

for the reply; to my knowledge the car has never been repainted, it appears to be original. As mentioned, the rest of the vehicle is pretty much OK, just the rear end is flaking badly.
I have never seen a factory painted clear peel off a car before. Are you sure it wasn't re-done? Usually crappy factory paints tend to get heavily pitted but unless its defective it shouldn't come off in sheets.
I'm not sure what you mean by "repairing" this. If you are considering trying to "patch" the affected areas with new clear coat, I think your chances of success are slim at best. Whether the bumper has been painted before or not, it is apparent that the adhesion between the clear coat and base is generally failing at this point. Anything less than stripping off the remaining clear coat, roughening (or removing) the base coat, and respraying the entire bumper with new base and clear coat is not likely to be satisfactory in appearance or durability. If you have the equipment and initiative to do this, go for it - worst case, you'll waste some time and materials before you take it to a pro if you're not happy with the results.
I would take it to a body shop and let them handle it for you. I've never seen as many guys willing to try to paint their own cars with no experience then corvette owners. I understand why, because quotes for corvette repaints are 5-20k. But as I said in other posts, you get what you pay for and Paint is the MOST important aspect of your car, its the first and last thing people see when they look at your car.
