well finally, after a poor first attempt at base, a resand and more epoxy, more base and 4 coats of clear i finally have it down to 1000 grit paper. looks good if i do say so myself.
after i go thru 2000 and 3000 paper i get to start polishing. that's my question- should i buy an orbital polisher or will my rotary polisher work? also what compound should be used first? i have the perfect-it series of compounds from a previous small repair i did, but should i start with polishing compound? any other tips? i'd hate to mess it up now!

The rotary will get you started but could leave swirl marks at the end. I always use a orbital for the final products. Orbitals are nice to have for applying and removing wax in the future.
I've used Meguiar's for 40 years so a simple procedure that I would recommend, start with Fine Cut Cleaner followed by #3 Machine Glaze, followed by Swirl Mark Remover. Use each product for as long as it takes to get the result you want.
You might want to practice on the daily driver first.
