I painted a car in high school, I painted pieces of my vette while in college (in Lacquer), the best job I did was on my scca racing car with catalyzed enamel, it turned out nice but it was never color sanded buffed.

I bought a Devilbiss Finishline 3 gun from them with 3 tips for about $130. I'm no pro, but I've been very happy with it. Looks like it goes for about $160 now.
One of my buddies bought a Finishline 3 for primer and another expensive gun for final paint. He liked his Finishline 3 so much he ended up using it for his bc/cc. I saw his show truck and it was beautiful. He told me he just put on lots of clear and wetsands it flat.
I think the key is getting good atomization and no globs or spitting.
